Work Experience

VICTIM/WITNESS ADVOCATE NEVADA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY OCTOBER 2013 - NOVEMBER 2014

As a victim advocate, first and foremost, I empathized with each and every victim I encountered, and earned their trust in order to guide them through their journey of recovery. I assisted my victims with obtaining compensation for medical losses resulting from their trauma, provided one-on-one counseling to victims and families of victims, escorted victims and witnesses to court and acted as liaison between counsel, judge and my victims, worked with local law enforcement to provide protection and relocation for victims as needed, and prepared and provided presentations and lectures to local are surrounding schools, law enforcement agencies, victim support groups and volunteers, as well as medical professionals and first on scene officials. I worked in an office independent from the primary Nevada County District Attorney's Office, and thus was the only victim services provider in my area, which meant I often provided services for both my county as well as our neighboring county. I did not have an onsite supervisor, which allowed me to grow my professional independence and leadership skills, as well as work closely with our ADA (as we were the only two people in addition to our two secretaries who represented the DA in our region) and local law enforcement officers. I established many relationships within my community through my position as Victim Advocate, and I strived to represent both the DA and victims of violent crime with sensitivity, honor and strength. The following is a brief yet comprehensive breakdown of my responsibilities, in addition to what was discussed above:

- Provide counseling and safe haven to victims of violent crimes

- Assist victims of violent crimes in securing rehabilitative funds, relocation endeavors, and protective orders if needed

- Prepare and escort victims and witnesses to and from court hearings and trials; act as court representative on behalf of victim; act as liaison between victims and judge/attorneys

- Educate the public about violent crimes and victim’s rights

- Work with local and neighboring police and sheriff departments on DA cases involving victims of crime

- Provide assistance to my immediate supervisor in her grant writing that funded my position
