NextGen Aeronautics, - Torrance, CA July 2005 – present Senior Engineer / Project Manager

Senior Engineer / Project Manager:

• Lead researcher, engineer, and manager of multiple SBIR programs from proposal writing through Phase II, totaling $2.4M.

• Performed design & analysis of articulating composite structure for SIGINT (10 MHz – 3 GHz) antenna attachment on C-130 aircraft.

• Engineering lead on $3M+ projects - Successfully coordinated internal team and subcontractors to ensure communication and technical cohesiveness.

• Conducted design and analysis of high strength & high damping material systems, lead material selection team, and designed experiments to validate design.

• Performed fatigue / life estimation on aircraft skin panels based on post-repair sizing and design loads for up to 134 holes per panel.

• Simulated furnace conditions (thermal, fluid flow, & EM) for ultra-long CNT growth identifying previously unknown circulation in the system, which was later validated experimentally by other team members. Engineer:

• Managed 4 Phase I SBIRs, transitioning two to other PIs for over $4M in continued work.

• Successful management / PI of Phase II SBIR for high-strength RF transparent materials, conducting material selection and testing to develop an RF transparent wing skin for use on future SensorCraft vehicles.

• Lead Engineer for parametric analysis via FEM of unique shearing aircraft skin materials with variable shear stiffness and high through-the-thickness stiffness, comparing 15 different material combinations in 4 different configurations under all 6 basic loading conditions to determine stiffness trends and matrix strain limits.

• Performed initial design of high-density energetic metal matrix composite mixing 3 different components to meet minimum density and available energy metrics, and performed preliminary analysis of fracture performance from internal explosion in LS-DYNA.

Air Force Research Laboratory, WPAFB – Dayton, OH June 2004 – July 2005 Graduate Student Researcher, Advanced Structural Concepts Branch Graduate Student Researcher: Characterized Shape Memory Polymers (SMP’s) for use as aircraft skins by testing shear properties over a range of temperatures and conducted standard stress-strain tests at different rates and temperatures to obtain viscoelastic properties of the SMP. Developed test plan and designed pre-strain fixture, shear fixture, and environmental chamber necessary for testing. Conducted tests, analyzed data, and modified the test plan based on new results to gather additional data. Performed simulation of SMP in NASTRAN to study buckling and out-of-plane deformation. Conducted preliminary structural sizing of a Z-wing (folding) morphing aircraft across full range of motion (0 – 120 ). Wrote MatLAB code for optimization of basic spar, with loads based on an integrated VLM aerodynamics code.

Universal Technologies Corporation – Dayton, OH June 2004 – July 2005 Research Engineer

Research Engineer: Responsible for design, set up, and running of ground vibration test on scale model F/A-18 wing. Constructed aeroelastic test setup for wind tunnel testing. Devised data acquisition program for both experiments in LAB View.
