Occupational Safety and Health Specialist (This is a federal job)
Duties, Accomplishments and Related Skills:
Advice principal safety staff members and separate tenant commands of safety and occupational health requirements, standards, recommendations, and procedures to include performing safety inspections to identify and eliminate any hazardous conditions and to detect unsafe work habits for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
Prepare and submit written report of findings and discrepancies utilizing Enterprise Safety Application Management System (ESAMS) to appropriate commands and recommend corrective action to eliminate unsafe conditions and practices.
Interpret Base Orders, Marine Corps Orders, OSHA 29 CFR 1910 regulations, American National Standards Institute, National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Agency, Contract Clauses, and manufacturer recommendations in Safety and Occupational Health policies and regulations.
Coordinate with safety managers to plan, organize, direct, and evaluate any hazards, hazardous operations conditions, and unsafe work practices.
Inspect warehouses and contents to include storage / material handling operations, steam plant facilities, shop machinery / related mechanical processes, printing plant equipment, vehicle maintenance garages, protective clothing, and fire suppression equipment.
Apply regulations, standards, and sound safety practices to detect hazardous operations / conditions using various tools such as light meters, infrared thermometers, ground fault interrupter, voltage detectors to eliminate or minimize the possibility of injury to personnel and damage to property.
Provide assistance to OSHA and accompanied by Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) with construction inspections.
Evaluate and conduct special studies of training techniques to ensure risk assessment and safety responsibilities are defined and administered.
Develop safety education training courses to include OSHA General Industry 10 and 30 hour safety orientations, motor vehicle driver’s improvement courses, and motorcycle basic riding courses for both beginning and advanced riders.
Manage the base ergonomics program that encompasses 60,000 military and civilian personal to include ergonomics surveys in the work place, industrial area and office via video media and oral presentations.
Analyze work related factors that cause musculoskeletal and nerve disorders, evaluate and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrences, and devises methods to eliminate and minimize hazards.
Conduct safety classes on Tent Camp Safety, Operational Risk Management (ORM), and Range Safety Officer, Range Tactical Safety, Occupational Safety / Health Standards for General Industry.
Evaluate tactical operational safety of various organizations during field exercises.
Review, investigate, and analyze personal injury mishap / hazardous work operations and conditions assessment data for corrective action.
