General Manager

Norampac Calgary Division - November 2006 to October 2015 Cascades is the largest paper and packaging company in Canada. Responsible for the Norampac Calgary division, co-ordinating all business functions including, marketing & sales, manufacturing, financial, human resources, administration and logistics. The business unit employs 160 people:

• Implemented Lean Manufacturing, 5's and SMED.

• Improve safety from the worst plant in the group to run for two years without a recordable injury, by motivating and empowering employees to take charge of their own safety.

• Increase volume by 50% by maximizing plant capacity and equipment output through improved planning, benchmarking and best practices.

• Increased machine reliability by following rigid maintenance schedules.

• Upgraded and install multiple machines and improved flow of product through the plant.

• Increase sales and market share though good quality and reliability.

• Managed and negotiated union contracts successfully. General Manager

Norampac Richmond Division - August 1997 to October 2006

• Improved profitability from negative return on sales to +10%, by changing the image of Norampac in the eyes of it's customers to be a reliable supplier of quality packaging. Improving productivity, controlling production costs and the developement of new markets and exports to optimise the available machines with minimum capital expenditure.

• Rationalized and changed management structure to create accountability and ownership of functions and departments.

Haggie Rand Steel & Wire Division - 1995 to 1997

Company is headquartered in Johannesburg, S.A. and employs approximately 3000 people producing wire, wire rope and strand, 75 years in business with total annual sales of $400 million. Responsible for the steel and wire rope division, co-ordinating all business functions including, marketing & sales, manufacturing, financial, administration and logistics.

• Faced with excess capacity in pre-stress strands, filled the order book through exports, reducing costs and increased overall profitability.

• Confronted with a single plant producing diverse, but related products, difficult to control because cost could not be properly allocated, split the company into three separate business units and realised previously- unobtainable efficiencies and greater profits through better cost control. Nampak- Barlows - 1991 to 1995

One of two producers of glass bottles in South Africa with two plants employing 500 employees. Produced in excess of 500 tons of glass bottles per day. Started as General Manager before the factory began production.

• Personally responsible for the establishment of the business, installation of plant and equipment, hiring personnel for various functions including financial, sales, production, logistics and maintenance. Negotiated all customer and supply contracts.

• Built a very successful high tech manufacturing business from scratch. Initiated a participative team spirit, which resulted in a very successful commissioning and operation of the facility, so much so that we realised in six-month efficiencies that would normally take two years to achieve. Columbus Stainless Steel- Barlows - 1985 to 1990

One of the largest producers of stainless steel in the world, and the only one in South Africa. Employed in excess of 3000 people.

• Started as an electrical engineer, promoted within the first three months to plant engineer, then to plant manager after two years. Appointed as Manager of the metal recovery plant at the conceptual stage, was put in charge of the whole project, which was designed to recover chromium from crushed ore. Responsible for engineering design, mechanical manufacture, civil work, mechanical erection and commissioning, hiring staff, setting operational and control procedures, formulating budgets, and establishing the metal recovery operation as an independent business.

Sectional Engineer

Anglo American Corporation - 1976 to 1985

Responsible for the engineering, maintenance, legal and safety compliance on various under ground shafts of Vaal Reefs, one of the largest gold mines in the world.

• Progressed in 8 years from Electrical Apprentice to Sectional Engineer on a shaft with an engineering complement of 422 people.
