Student Design Engineer, Off-Gas Treatment Senior Design Project
Researched and designed process solutions for the pre-treatment and containment of hazardous low activity waste (LAW) leaking from underground storage tanks at the Hanford site.
oDesigned solutions to remove and stabilize halides and radionuclides from the liquid off-gas condensate produced by caustic scrubbers, wet electrostatic precipitators and submerged bed scrubbers prior to reaching the Liquid Effluent Retention Facility
oDesigned ion exchange/precipitation/ultrafiltration processes targeted for Cesium/Technetium/Iodine/Uranium, based on initial feedstock concentrations, within pre-determined specifications
oDeveloped the conceptual flow sheets for all identified ion exchange and cementation processes with calculated cycle times
oDesigned solutions for an optimal cementation and/or grout processes after ion exchange treatment including material composition and storage mixing requirements
oIdentified safety and environmental hazard analysis associated with the processes to ensure optimal safety for the operator and environment according to OSHA and EPA standards
oPerformed cost analyses that included process material and equipment resulting in an estimated 3 million start-up cost with a 224 million cost over the lifetime of the project
