responsible for the daily operational activities of the genetic diagnostics laboratory in support of invertebrate pest identification.
Assists in the design, coordination, and execution of projects to develop and apply molecular diagnostic approaches to invertebrate identification.
Applies the principles of molecular biology to perform experiments and operates instruments and computer designed for DNA-based analyses.
This requires optimizing PCR procedures to amplify target DNA, designing primers/probes using bioinformatics programs, analyzing genetic data sets using appropriate statistical applications, using electrophoretic techniques to estimate DNA sizes/concentrations to purify products, editing raw data files containing genetic information, cloning DNA fragments using recombinant technology, and identifying restriction enzyme sites, probes, SNPs or other markers useful for diagnostic applications.
Collects data, maintains computerized records, and uses various software (e.g., Lotus and Microsoft data bases, word processors, and spreadsheets) to complete reports of work.
