Professional Experience

KLIGER-WEISS INFOSYSTEMS – Greenvale,, New York Mar’06 – Jun ‘15

Manager of System Operations

Handling day-to-day Infrastructure support of UNIX, Network and Internet services for an application service provider to smaller chains in the retail industry.

Upgraded Solaris 8 and version 3/05 of Solaris 10 servers to latest version of Solaris 10. This allowed the upgraded of file systems to ZFS and the use of zones to create multiple virtual servers on a single server.

Managed migration of internet and firewall services from one ISP to another.

Implemented VLAN bridging accross a point to point link with a co-location site in Colorado. Migrated 50% of the client base to servers in the co-location facility.

Upgraded data center UPS and air conditioning systems.

Moved datacenter from Port Washington to Greenvale by bridging the server network with a WAN link, then migrated servers and internet services over several planned moves.

Implemented production services at the DR site to support store polling in case the main site was down.

Subnetted the company network and implement a DMZ for client access. Subnets for two separate companies and server subnets were created and migrated. A new VOIP phone systems also required 2 subnets to isolate the phone system of each company. The subnets where then extended to the co-location facility for backup.

Assisted in the migration of client data from an outdated/unsupported UNIFY database that did not support network access to MySQL 5.1. This allowed for separation of the data layer of the back office application to a separate hardware platform (X86 running Solaris 10).

Migrated MySQL version 5.1 to 5.5 and added replication instances of client databases to zoned OS partitions on other production servers.

Implemented Netvault backup and AppManager server monitoring software on Red Hat Linux.

JP MORGAN CHASE – New York, New York 2004 - 2006

Vice President of Infrastructure Support – Systems monitoring/capacity planning and job scheduling

Manager of the hardware monitoring and job scheduling for the Private Bank’s Distributed Computing Platform.

Managed migration of hardware monitoring from CA Unicenter to Tivoli. This provided a more robust monitoring environment for the data center and added email and auto-paging notification profiles for the different SA, DBA, application and operation support teams, streamlining the notification process.

Consolidated multiple NDM file transfer servers to a single production cluster for the benefit of software/hardware cost savings and to simplify support.

Upgraded and expanded the use of CA Workload Scheduler as the standard scheduler tool for the Private Bank, implementing a single scheduler server to drive production batch jobs on Unix and Wintel platforms.

Banco Santander Central Hispano – New York, New York 1995 - 2002

Vice President of Technical Infrastructure Support - UNIX System Admin / Oracle DBA

Invited to join New York branch of Spain’s largest bank to support relational databases and applications on UNIX platforms and design a network topology. Led a team consisting of DBA’s and UNIX SA’s. Developed backup and disaster recovery plans and supported applications for risk, fixed income accounting, back office accounting and settlement of equity trading. Maintained hardware and software support contracts with manufacturers and third party organizations for operating system and hardware support. Consolidated WAN and Internet ISP contracts with common carriers to leverage larger discounts and provide better SLA agreements on DR fail over. Supported network connectivity to ADP Brokerage Services and worked with vendors on the initial installation and upgrades of NASDAQ workstation II, NYFIX and BRASS applications for equity desk and Open Bloomberg Trading, Reuters Kondor+ for fixed income. Other accomplishments include:

Saved over $250,000 dollars associated with creating a local data center by instead developing and implementing a WAN infrastructure utilizing Verizon SONET Technology to provide a redundant network infrastructure allowing system access to 150 users in a satellite office.

Implemented cost-saving VLAN and Quality of Service capabilities with WAN and LAN upgrade to an Extreme Networks backbone that allowed placing secondary market data, network and Internet facilities in the Disaster Recovery site, saving the cost of redundant feeds at the primary location that would have cost over $5,000 /month. My selection of Extreme Network hardware saved $100,000 over comparable Cisco switching, allowing us to budget more bandwidth between DR site and the NYC offices.

Championed purchase of a SAN with disk level copying software, which allowed quick database image restores as a recovery mechanism in case of failure and reduced the entire batch cycle time over an hour and created refreshed copies of production data for developer debugging. Backup window was reduced over two hours on a critical database now that the mirrored disk image could be copied to tape after the batch cycle was completed.

Improved database and application performance with hardware and software upgrades including Hitachi 9200 fiber channel storage arrays, HP XP 128 storage arrays, HP Service Guard high availability clustering software and an OpenMail e-mail server. Four Sun Enterprise class servers were consolidated onto 2 Sun SunFire rack mounted servers, which saved thousands a year on maintenance and OS licensing costs.

Eliminated time consuming, operator initiated processes and provided accounting and risk departments with timely daily reports by automating download of reports and extract files using RJE software and UNIX scripting.
