04/2013-Present Develop Responsive Adsorptive Membranes for High Efficiency Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography (Advisor: X. Qian, Co-advisor: R. Wickramasinghe)

Developed responsive HIC membranes with high capacity (close to HIC phenyl membrane) and facile elution advantage using poly(vinylcaprolactam) as ligand

Investigated salts, proteins and pH effects on binding capacity and recovery

Developed protocol for cleaving ligands grafted by ATRP from RC membranes

Characterized responsive ligands by AFM, GPC, turbidity and dynamic light scattering

Designed comb-like and novel pH and thermo dual-responsive HIC ligands 08/2011-03/2013 Develop High Performance Affinity Membrane Adsorbers for Protein Separations (Advisor: X. Qian, Co-advisor: R. Wickramasinghe)

Self-synthesized tweezer-like bisphosphonate based (Arg) affinity monomer

Established ATRP grafting condition for copolymeric affinity ligands

Investigated copolymer chain length effects on lysozyme (Arg rich) static/dynamic binding

Illustrated the selectivity mechanism by monomer design (single/double arm) and combined with collaborator’s MD simulation results. Other Collaborated Projects

MAST center projects (with Southwestern Energy Company and Tyson): provided data for membrane surface characterization (SEM,AFM,XPS,ATR-FTIR, contact angle)

Provided dynamic light scattering data for lysozyme unfolding studies by simulations Expertise

Hands-on experience on protein purification with ligand design of membrane chromatography (membrane surface modification)

Hands-on experience on process development with AKTA FPLC (affinity and HIC),density gradient ultracentrifugation (virus) and filtration (depth filter and TFF)

Hands-on experience of several analytical methods: biomolecule/synthetic polymer characterization (dynamic light scattering, SDS-PAGE, GPC, nuclei acid electrophoresis), SEM, AFM (in air and in liquid), ATR-FTIR, contact angle and assays
