Research Experience

Process Chemist, Myriant Corporation (Feb. 2015 – March 2016)

Designed and directed laboratory scale experiments to test feasibility of process chemistry solutions for bio-based chemical plant in Louisiana.

Advised on the relevant chemistry for the development and scale-up of new chemicals from laboratory to pilot scale before recommending in commercial scale planning and implementation.

Conferred with inter-departmental scientists and engineers to analyze laboratory and plant scale data to generate technical reports, presentations and presented results.

Assisted in research and development of bio-based analogues by derivative chemistry to the existing petro-based commodity and performance based chemicals in a safe, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient manner.

Supported evaluation of acid-base or bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for making bio-derived products.

Worked with safety committee to ensure the preparedness of laboratory for ACC’s RCMS audit with certification awarded to R&D labs on June 2015.

Postdoctoral Researcher, LSU AgCenter, Audubon Sugar Institute (June 2010 – Feb. 2015)

oSynthesized biodegradable polyester from cane sugar refinery byproducts that can be cross-liked via standard photolithographic techniques.

oCharacterized polymers and determined optimal formulations and cure times for biodegradability, dye uptake, toughness and strength.

oMaintained all analytical equipment and developed methods for Agilent 7890 GC, HP 5890 GC, Agilent GC-MS, Agilent 1100 and 1200 HPLCs, Dionex HPIC 5000+, Mettler TGA/SDTA851e, Nicolet 6700 FTIR, and Varian Cary Eclipse.

oWrote grant and received the award of $100,000 to purchase HPIC as well as submitting all paperwork for purchase, receipt, installation and final report.

oProcured Agilent 7890 GC through competitive state bid process and oversaw successful installation.

oManaged an account bringing in $60K in 1 year for pilot-scale processing of biomass and accompanying analytical analysis and quality checks.

oSupervised laboratory supplies and chemical inventory.

oPerform final molasses survey for factory operations in Louisiana.

Graduate Assistant, LSU (2002-2010)

oDesigned experiments to investigate liposome and dendrimer interactions.

oLearned Laser, X-Ray (SSRL, Stanford and LNLS, Brazil), and neutron scattering (NCNR, NIST) techniques for characterizing size and shape of particles.

oBuilt and maintained a small angle X-Ray scattering (SAXS) beamline at LSU-CAMD.

oUsed freeze fracture and electron microscopy techniques to support particle size and shape data from dynamic light scattering (DLS) and SAXS.

oWorked extensively with GPC-MALS to determine Mn and Mw of polysaccharides.

oTraveled to Turkey (METU) to teach advanced scattering techniques.

oWrote computer programs in LabView, C++, and Visual Basic to interface with equipment.

oMaintained website using Java and HTML.

Research Assistant, USM (1997-2000)

oSynthesized hydrophobically modified polysaccharides for use as emulsifiers.

oStudied the rheological properties of emulsions through Contraves and Rheometerics Scientific 5000.

oDetermined critical micelle concentration (CMC) of emulsions using Krüss tensiometer.

oEvaluated stability of emulsions over time and produced phase diagrams from data collected.

Other Related Experience

Completed “Techniques for Characterization of Carbohydrate Structure of Polysaccharides” training course at the University of Georgia Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, August 5, 2011.

Taught undergraduate and graduate laboratory classes including: general chemistry, macromolecular studies, and polymer characterization.

Maintained electronic equipment including scientific instrumentation and all computer accessories both hardware and software.
