Person, Place, and Regulation: Predictors of Geographic Disparities in Individual Use of Colorectal Cancer Screening in the US

http://www.academyhealth.org/Events/content.cfm?ItemNumber=6996 June 9, 2014

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is more prevalent in older persons and is the third most common cancer in the United States. Over 40% of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage portending worse health outcomes, which could be avoided with higher screening rates by endoscopic technologies. Multilevel modeling of individuals in the 100% FFS Medicare population is used to examine the predictors of the observed.disparities in endoscopic CRC screening. The conceptual model describes spatial interaction among people and characteristics of their contextual environments and healthcare markets along the pathways to health care utilization, and includes personal, local market, and wider regional market.
