Mill/Process Engineer (May 2006-May 2009)
Calibrated reheat furnace burners to achieve effective combustion
Calculated monthly gas usage and communicated monthly nominations to Texas Gas
Responsible for authorizing in-house digging permits by verifying underground piping and power lines
Drafted and sourced deteriorating machinery components while updating existing engineering drawings and documentation
Identified bottlenecks and worked on the specific inefficiencies to improve yield and productivity
Designed shear blades for specific products to increase throughput
Assisted the safety coordinator on safety issues by identifying, and resolving both process and ergonomic hazards PROJECT ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Commissioned the new rollshop at CMC Steel Arizona by managing all aspects of the project Managerial
-Performed initial evaluation and ROI analysis for the project proposal
-Wrote the official CER (Capital Expenditure Request) along with accompanying justification
-Conducted internal interviews and hired for new roll turner positions
-Developed training program for new roll turners that had no prior machining experience
-Set up tooling costing/expensing system to properly reflect monthly usages
-Define KPI’s for new rollshop operations
Engineering
-Sourced, scheduled, and supervised contractor and engineering work for lathe foundation, installation, and commissioning
-Selected lathe that would meet all of CMC’s turning needs and customized machine functions to specific needs
-Conducted acceptance testing to confirm machine conformity
-Designed, sourced, and ordered special tooling required for complicated roll profiles
-Wrote all CNC programs required for turning current roll inventory
-Designed new roll pass layouts using AutoCAD for different product sequencing
-Designed machine shop equipment layout according to optimal material workflow, decreasing bottlenecks and operating within space constraints
Project Management
-Defined the project scope, budget, and timeline along with specific deliverables along each step
-Scheduled and implemented a 6 week, off-site training session at a sister plant in Texas
-Contract negotiation on pricing, delivery & payment terms, commissioning and training, and technical support for lathe Result: The project was successfully completed and the rollshop is fully operational. It was completed on time and just under the approved $920k budget. The rollshop operations “broke even” after three months in operations and has continued to add value to CMC since start-up. A post-completion review conducted one year after its implementation showed that the project was delivering the ROI as initially proposed. As an additional benefit to cost savings, CMC’s production capacity is much more flexible to customers’ needs.
Member of focus team tasked with the challenge of removing “twisting” from CMC AZ 13mm pass design
-Worked closely with Texas mill pass designers to identify Arizona’s specific challenges
-Modified pass designs on specific ovals to achieve higher reductions
-Coordinated and implemented trial pass designs into production Result: Successfully rolled 13mm Rebar without the previously required “twisting”.
Introduction of new product to W Silver Inc. Rolling Mill (13mm Rebar)
-Designed all finishing passes (6 stands)
-Calculated finishing speeds for finishing stands
-Created CNC program for machining all finishing rolls Result: Successfully rolled 13mm Rebar which allowed W Silver Inc to sell a new product.
Implementation of mechanical component to aid in length changes at cut-to-length line
-Drafted all mechanical components for project (leadscrew and nut, bearing blocks, bushings)
-Worked closely with external machine shop to oversee component fabrication
-Sized gearmotor and coupling for the leadscrew
Result: Reduced length changes at cut-to-length line from an average of 41 minutes to less than 10 minutes.
Design of Air/Oil lubrication system for mill finishing stands
-Designed new chock bearing retainers and new roll collars to house a lip seal
-Specified and sourced lip seals to be used
-Worked closely with overseas machine shop to reduce cost of new components Result: The Air/Oil system currently lubricates 4 out of 6 finishing stands. It has reduced W Silver Inc’s grease use and has contributed to improving the mill’s housekeeping. Careful part sourcing and effective communication with overseas parts suppliers helped reduce the cost of the project by 30%.
Design of finishing stand restbars
-Designed a new restbar for all 10” finishing stands
-Maintained close communication with overseas fabricator Result: Designed a functional restbar that improved upon W Silver Inc’s existing restbars. The in-house designing and out- sourced fabrication of the restbars saved W Silver Inc. over 40% of the current supplier’s cost. APPLICABLE TRAINING:
