B.S. in Molecular Bioscience and Biotechnology, May 2015
(See RELEVANT COURSEWORK / LAB TECHNIQUES)
Monroe Community College - Rochester, NY, United States
A.A.S. in Biotechnology, June 2011
RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Biofuels Research, Gosnell School of Life Sciences, RIT
February 2015 – May 2015
Lipid extraction from algae for the purpose of producing biofuels with a focus on the use of microwaves in the process of lipid extraction and transesterification.
Advisor: Dr. Jeffrey Lodge, Center for Bioscience Education and Technology, RIT
Discipline-Based Education Research
June 2013 – May 2014
Independent project on student and expert perceptions and understanding of universal scientific concepts. Experts in diverse scientific fields are being interviewed to establish the similarities and differences in perception of particular concepts between major scientific fields. Results will be used to design better teaching materials that encourage transfer of knowledge between disciplines.
Advisor: Dr. Dina Newman, Gosnell School of Life Sciences, RIT
Educational Video Development
June – August 2013
Designed, filmed and edited educational videos designed to supplement freshman biology classes. Two were produced to explain 1) diffusion and transport across a cell membrane, and 2) Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium. Also acted in an interactive video vignette about osmosis.
Advisors: Dr. Dina Newman and Dr. Gary Skuse, Gosnell School of Life Sciences, RIT
Human Genetics
November 2011 – February 2012
Study of SNP frequencies and SNP frequency relationships using “1000 Genomes” data. A program was written that analyzed SNP data from approximately 1000 individuals to establish SNP frequencies and linkage frequencies.
Advisor: Dr. John Sanford, inventor of the “gene gun”, Department of Horticulture, Cornell University
RELEVANT COURSEWORK / LAB TECHNIQUES
Genetic Engineering - Methods included cloning, Southern blotting, restriction mapping.
Synthetic Biology – Designed a synthetic organism using BioBricks. Individual project involved creating a model organism to be used as a standard to study the population genetics of biofuel-producing organisms.
Tissue Culture – Methods included growing and maintaining a number of common cell lines, and establishing primary cell lines from chick embryos.
Microbial and Viral Genetics – Methods included bacteriophage growth, and characterization of mutants.
Evolutionary Biology – Methods included sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis.
Other Coursework / Lab Skills – Microbiology and biomolecule analysis techniques, including Southern, Northern, and Western blotting. Techniques also include ELISA and biomolecule separations techniques. Experience includes various standard and non-standard lab techniques that are not listed here, especially those related to microbiology and macromolecule analysis.
Unfamiliar lab techniques are easily learned and performed.
