As part of the Information Technology Department, I am a Telecom technician responsible for the installation, troubleshooting and repairs of telecommunications equipment, and facilities, also focusing on MAC orders throughout the entire campus (Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan). This includes educating customers on service features, functionality, and usage of phones, plus voicemail setup, on the Avaya Aura Enterprise system. Proficient with installation of CAT5, CAT6 cable for use in LAN/WAN application, including wiring to the 568A/B standards. Troubleshoots and tests all runs with Fluke Network equipment, the DTX Cable Analyzer, the Link Runner Network Auto Tester. Will also operate Laptop, to access required systems and equipment, using Cisco CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol). Provides support for cable TV (Time Warner) in student residences, maintaining coaxial cables, and providing service for students with their televisions.
Performs closely with different groups within the IT department, among which are Classroom support, User services, and the Network group. With Network group; installs network equipment upgrades for servers switches, and wireless access points, while renovating, and maintaining neat, orderly MDF’s, and IDF’s, by providing patch cord, and UPS management. With Classroom support – installs cables for podiums, and projectors in addition of regular checking of classroom emergency phones. With User Services – receives requests, from Desktop support group ie; Vlan, and data jack information, to provide network connectivity for end user devices (PCs, laptops, printers), by obtaining active switch ports, using Orion Solar Winds network performance manager.
Also works with non-IT departments on campus, such as Design and Construction, with cabling new buildings, and renovation of existing spaces. Conference Services, preparing residence Village/dorms, for summer occupancy, by different outside organizations like Teach for America. Liaison for outside vendors including Verizon, and AT&T – T1, trunk, and cell tower maintenance. Starcom Communications – fiber optical, and core network upgrades, Mason Technologies –dispatching, and leading teams for upgrading entire campus, to convert dormitories for wireless capabilities with Cisco wireless access points throughout.

At this CWA union shop, I was involved in all aspects of copper and fiber optic premise cabling system installation, new and renovated construction environments, developed and implemented cable pathways and supports for mass cable installation, IDF/MDF build out, labeling, terminating, testing/certification of UTP, coaxial, and fiber optic cables.
