Engineering Manager clean room process development at Nlight Photonics

Strong experience in six sigma based lean manufacturing methodologies & management of high volume production environments. Many years of hands-on expertise in clean room and laser based optical system development. Awarded multiple patents in the design and fabrication of coherent optical systems.

Experience

2013- 2015 Lightwave Logic Inc., Longmont, CO

Manager & VP of Engineering & Product Development

Led build-out and process definition for creation of corporate class 100 clean room facilities.

Created and ran a prototype 50ghz bandwidth electro-optic polymer modulator production process including full clean room travelers and test protocols

Led a world class team of chemists synthesizing new and proprietary electro-optic material systems for commercialization of potentially terabit communication systems.

Instituted dual source and fully traceable supply chain systems and corresponding real time master database correlating material test performance to device performance results.

Re-engineered and ran the optical testing lab operations for electro-optical testing of proprietary materials and devices. This resulted in an immediate performance feedback loop allowing rapid modification and enhancement of device and material performance characteristics

Organized, correlated performance data and created summary roadmaps for a 2-year multi-site investigation into hybrid silicon nano-photonic coherent optical devices.

2008-2013 nLight Corp, Vancouver, WA

Engineering Manager Process Development

Hands on management of a team of laser diode packaging experts, individual contributor for various clean room based product development activities including gold-tin solder and lead tin solder techniques for heat sinking high power InP and GaAs laser diode assemblies.

Took the process development team through a full Green belt/Black belt EIT course. Completed all course work and drove >150K cost improvement on legacy product line.

Continuous improvement activities included qualifying and installing new capital equipment, focused a tight integration between the process development team and the running production floor environment resulting in reduced cycle times and 20% improved first time yields

Drove M203 range finder based laser component program through a gate based product development business cycle. Qualified new vendors, identified, analyzed and eliminated significant cost of poor quality issues in the legacy supply chain,

Transferred key technologies from the advanced technology group to the vertically integrated manufacturing team.

2000 - 2007 Lumera Corp., Bothell, WA

Sr. Researcher, Future Technology and Products

Key team member in the growth process from start-up to publicly traded Corporation.

Designed and patented new electro-optic polymer modulators, created new RF electrode designs and DRIE-ICP fabrication techniques, specified and led the construction of a class 100 clean room.

Instituted state of the art multi-layer Si wafer based clean room lithography, thin film low-k dielectric coating, DRIE-ICP etching, and sputter metallization fully documented fabrication processes.

Created and ran guided wave optic simulations in both R-SOFT Beam Prop and Fimmwave analysis packages. Designed testing protocols, procured test equipment, set test methodologies and drove testing of these novel and patented electro-optic modulators

Led sourcing, procurement, installation and qualification of custom designed DRIE-ICP and metallization equipment. Built a new guided wave optic high speed test lab and instituted fully traceable material and device performance corporate information tracking systems.

As Principal investigator, proposed, budgeted and managed an Air Force BAA: “Ultra linear Directional Coupler Based on High Performance Electro-optic Polymers”. Ensured on time completion and appropriate corporate resource allocation, issued summary interim performance reports and led multiple face to face customer presentations with AFRL-SNDP

1998 - 2000 Philips Display Components, Eindhoven, Netherlands & Ann Arbor, Michigan

Technical Lead 32V HDTV

Led the 32V digital TV deflection unit technical product development effort. Guided the Electron-optic HDTV design from hands-on prototype development in Eindhoven N.V. to specification, installation, and development of a multi-tool production line for mass production in Juarez Mexico of 500k units/year @ $600/unit of 32V digital TV assemblies.

Group Leader Deflection Units Philips Display Components

Streamlined factory performance and deflection unit electro-optical testing programs.

Implemented a complete SAP software rollout for North America Display deflection units which integrated Juarez Plant 5, Findley Ohio CRT manufacturing, and Arbor MI. headquarters business activities

Instituted new testing methodologies eliminating significant out of spec internal material transfer from Plant 5 Juarez Mexico to production facilities in Findley Ohio. Managed and mentored a distributed group in Ann Arbor MI, Findley Ohio, and Juarez Mexico. Was nominated and placed on Philips executive fast track program.
