As a resident, I am involved in the management of patients who are referred to our department for the management of psychiatric conditions and other related behavioral and psychological problems

(depression, anxiety, OCD etc). As a clinical resident in one of the premier medical institutions in Mindanao, we are continuously exposed to a variety of patients and conditions which would hone our talent as psychiatrists in therapeutic communication, provide a test bed for our interpersonal skills as well as our ability to solve clinical problems and issues in an environment where in patients are impoverished and resources are scarce.

In my former position as the chief resident of the department of psychiatry, I dealt with administrative work, managed and oversaw my co-residents, ward issues and policies, and provided training and teaching duties for affiliate nursing students, medical clerks (students), hospital staff (e.g. stress management programs) and attended invitational lectures/resource person regarding mental health, and psychiatry in general to lay individuals and organizations in the community.

Former chief resident of the department of psychiatry in one of the premier medical centers in Southern Mindanao and the largest government psychiatric facility in the region, handling inpatient and outpatient services, community psychiatry, forensic/legal cases, addiction and substance abuse, consultation-liaison, geriatric psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry. With experience in teaching and mentoring medical and nursing student affiliates, medical interns, and issues and co- morbid psychiatric/behavioral conditions associated with PLHIV. Skills Trained in general medicine with rotations in the different specialty fields of Internal Medicine, Neurology and Neuropsychiatry, Pediatrics, Surgery, OB-Gyne and Emergency Department experience.

Current senior resident in the department of psychiatry with focus on behavioral medicine, consultation-liaison psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, geriatrics, child and adolescent, forensic psychiatry (with court cases/court room experience) anxiety and depression, behavioral and psychiatric aspects of HIV/AIDS, diagnosis and classification of psychiatric illnesses and conditions.

Trained in psychosocial support and psychological first aid of individuals in crisis (disaster conditions i.e Typhoon Pablo ) with field experience. Other skills involve analysis and diagnosis of human psychiatric and behavioral disorders, holistic patient care, consultation-liaison (multidisciplinary patient care), with experience in community medicine-psychiatry and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

My training in behavioral medicine and exposure in psychiatry as well as neuropsychiatry and internal medicine, will definitely be of help and as I liaise and bridge the gap between the different stakeholders, the scientific experts, other healthcare professionals. Definitely, facilitation, is a big part of my training and will be of an advantage when it comes to working with these groups.

Our exposure to research and teaching loads during residency will be an advantage when training the various internal customers on the pathophysiology of diseases, its management and other scientific updates which may be deemed necessary for them to keep abreast of your goal in being at the forefront of different research activities among multiple therapeutic areas, contribute in the progress of health and medicine not only in the Philippines but globally as well. 5
