Objective

I am looking for a leadership position which will leverage my experience leading multiple teams and strategic initiatives. Veteran leader with experience leading cross functional teams.

Experience

A Place for Mom – Director, Software Engineering August 2013 - Present

A Place for Mom is a rapidly growing, Private Equity backed company creating innovative solutions to help families discover and procure the best senior care for their loved ones.

As Director of Engineering at A Place for Mom I have managed the websites, call center technology, SFDC & Informatica, and DevOps teams. For each team I managed roadmaps and delivery of features and programs. I also wrote the engagement plan and led the effort to select a near shore outsourcing group to take on additional feature work for the websites. Finally, I was responsible for the management of our phone system vendor who provides all telephony services for the company home office, our remote and nationally distributed sales team, and multiple virtual call centers.

Moved the team from an Agile/SCRUM process to a Kanban work stream, improving throughput.

Through improved delivery, went from missing 60% of roadmap dates to less than 20%.

Improved our Sales process workflow in SFDC by working with an expert vendor and our sales directors.

Solavei – Director Software Development February 2013 – August 2013

Directed CMS migration project bridging a large off shore development group and local consultants. Developed long-term vision, project plan, and documentation process that simplified communication between our consulting team and the off shore development team doing the work. Tracked and reported on project schedule. I also revamped our PMO processes by moving from tracking projects in Jira to FogBugz facilitating the linking development work, also tracked in FB, back to PMO initiatives in a hierarchical form.

Amazon – Software Development Manager October 2010 – January 2013

My job as SDM has been to manage a team of 7 engineers while also doing market and performance analysis of our sponsored links business. My team designed, developed, and operated a closed loop optimization engine responsible for creating, monitoring and pricing every Amazon sponsored link advertisement.

During my time at Amazon I worked with my team to improve our Scrum process, code reviews, documentation, career planning, and overall processes.

Team was originally missing 50% of Sprint goals, reduced to less than 20%.

Started formal sprint planning and estimation sessions. Developed relationships with Product team to understand ideal hours and proper loading.

Developed team members and promoted 3 SDEIs to SDEII.

SuperMedia (Dex Media) – Mobile Program Manager June 2009 – October 2010

As a PM at SuperMedia I led both the business side of our Mobile Applications as well as the engineering efforts across multiple teams, time zones and vendors as well as providing the bridge between business and engineering. Key challenges included managing the relationship between the internal engineering teams and vendors as well as tracking project status and planning across multiple mobile application platforms and mobile websites. By implementing the project management tool FogBugz, I created a centralized view of the roadmap and related work down to the task level which improved predictability of releases as well as overall quality.

Kiha (Aro) – Mobile Program Manager February 2008 – May 2009

As a founding member of Kiha, I was responsible for definition of key product features. Deliverables included design and development of demos responsible for launch of the company (spun out of Vulcan) and responsibility for system data and synchronization features. I performed all manner of IT roles during startup process from IT and System Administrator to PM.

Vulcan / FlipStart – Software Program Manager September 2007 – February 2008

FlipStart was an Ultra Mobile PC concept developed in house by Vulcan. My responsibilities on FlipStart regarded the software specifications for the machine from the BIOS to the desktop software we included to assist the user with device specific configurations.

During the course of my work on FlipStart the project started to shift toward a mobile phone. I began work specifying and designing demos of this phone, which eventually were approved by Paul Allen, and we formed a new company to build it called Kiha.

BD&A – Software Development Manager December 2005 – August 2007

My responsibilities at BD&A included managing the website team and our B2B integration with vendors. For the website team, I was responsible for all aspects of development from requirements to delivery of new sites and features. I also selected our B2B EDI vendor and supervised their integration into our system.

Qualifacts – Development Team Lead January 2004 – December 2005

During my engagement with Qualifacts, my career changed. Originally hired as a Senior Software Engineer it soon became obvious that what they really needed was a Project Manager. My role evolved into Program Manager, Engineering Team Manager and site lead. The project was a medical form and patient management system for medium sized mental health inaccuracies and my client was Sacramento County. Discovering that the schedule originally given to our client was unrealistic I build out a complete Microsoft Project schedule which topped out at 20k hours. In order to bring this project in on time, my team was augmented by Avanade engineers to a total of 22 people. We brought the project in on schedule and 10% under hours.

Previous Positions – Software Development Engineer September 1994 – January 2004

As an engineer I enjoyed varied experiences at several companies working on everything from Device Drivers, Telephony, and a variety of COM based Windows services, largely in C++ and SQL.
