Project:

Computer Usage Monitoring System.

Problem Definition: It is known that in a college/School Lab or Offices there exits large number of computers connected each of which may not be necessarily used at a given point of time. In Offices, employees tend to leave their computers switched ON even when they aren’t working on it or even not present at their desk. Similarly, in labs students or faculty do not take much measures to switch OFF the machine when their work is finished. This may not be a big difference in a small-scale environment, but imagine a scenario of a large scale office where there are large number of workstations. It will result in hefty amount of power wastage eventually ending up with huge electricity bills. Thus, arises the need to develop a convenient and simpler method for monitoring the entire workplace in a single glance.

Motivation of the project: The motivation of the development of this software was derived from the observation that it is indeed a tedious and tiresome job to keep track of what is going on each computer. Hence, this software is intended to make monitoring of PC’s connected in a LAN simpler and more convenient.

Scope of the project: This system would be employed typically in an environment where there are number of individual workstations connected to a Server Hub and needs timely singular monitoring. For example- Offices, Schools/Colleges Computer labs, IT Centers etc.

Development tools and technologies: Front End- VB.Net, Back End- SQL Server 2005 and Development environment- Visual Studio 2005 or 2008, SQL Server Management Studio.

Conclusion: The main motive of reducing the overhead of extremely large costs of electricity borne by the organization will be substantially reduced and project focuses on making the job of the administrator simpler and convenient and this purpose is fulfilled with additional functionalities like Remote Application Access.
