SKILLS & ABILITIES

I have been working for the State of Texas for five years as a direct care staff for both the San Antonio State Supported Living Center and also the San Antonio State Hospital.

During my time with the Supported Living Center I gained valuable experience in many different areas of health care and nursing services.

As an entry level staff member, I preformed basic patient care skills such as bathing, grooming and assessments; along with keeping basic patient reports I am also CPR certified.

I received several promotions into supervisory and eventually managerial positions within the State system.

I received trained in staff management skills and, attended several off campus training sessions on management of staff schedules, staff disciplinary and recognition practices and time editing and, schedule managing practices with the State of Texas.

As a supervisor I was solely responsible for the coordination of up to 11 staff members for an entire shift. The organization of my shift required that I demonstrate the capacity to manage staff member deployment and assignments, maintaining schedules, maintaining acceptable daily patient care and treatment along with maintaining patient records and staff files.

At the San Antonio State Hospital I was received higher level experience in a hospital setting. As a Psychiatric Nurses Assistant III (supervisory position) I admitted patients to an Acute Unit within the hospital which included filing patient records, processing discharges and transfers within the hospital, assessing and entering daily vital signs for up to 40 patients at a time; while also managing the daily deployment of up to ten staff for each 12 hour shift.

Also at the State Hospital I learned how to accurately enter patient data and demographics upon entry to the hospital and also upon the patient departure to their next treatment location. In addition I kept and organized deployment of staff to off bound patient appointments with other care providers. These appointments include medical and, dental appointments with private practice providers.

PYSCHIATRIC NURSING ASSITANT III, SAN ANTONIO STATE HOSPITAL

10/01/14 - Present

This is a supervisory position within the State Hospital nursing services department. My job duties included supervision of up to ten staff members, daily assignments, patient care coordination, patient initial assignments on arrival to the unit, discharging patients upon leaving hospital care, I was responsible for inter- hospital transfers. Other responsibilities were maintaining patient information, according to HIPPA standards, taking and entering patient daily vital signs each morning.

I was solely responsible for the direction of my shift from 2-10:30pm. I was responsible for all of the coordination of patient care on my wing of the unit. This included the deployment of up to 11 staff per shift to their daily assignments within the unit. I also was responsible for schedules of staff under my direct report ten plus staff at a time. Also I was responsible for maintaining yearly required training schedules for the staff under my direct report.

I was responsible for coordination of my shift from 2-10:30 p.m. I was responsible for all of the coordination of patient care on my wing of the unit while working alongside staff to achieve the daily treatment goals of the facility. This included the deployment of up to 11 staff per shift to their daily assignments within the unit. This unit was an all-female unit for mentally handicapped individuals with moderate care needs.

I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology at the University Of Phoenix I am have 43 credit hours.

COMMUNICATION

While working at both the State Supported Living Center and The State Hospital I acquired some very important communication skills. While working with patients with mental and intellectual disabilities the development of both advanced communication skills and critical thinking skills critical in order to effectively and efficiently care for these very special patient’s needs. The degree of gratification I receive from breaking through communication barriers that I encounter with my patients at these facilities is what made me decided to pursue a degree in Psychology in order to gain higher understanding of these individuals.

LEADERSHIP

The skills I have acquired and the gratification that receive from this effective communication helps me to better understand my patients and be more empathetic with their needs and unique circumstances. This communication allowed me be an advanced level supervisor within this facility. The critical thinking skills and managerial training received with the state has helped me to achieve an upper level supervisory position within a two year time frame with the facility. My leadership skills are strong and include respectful interaction, consistency, and most importantly effective and accurate communication between staff and myself as a supervisor.
