Professional Experience in Aerospace Industry
Chief systems engineer with 25 years of leadership and execution experience in the design, analysis, integration, verification, validation, and certification of aircraft flight control systems. Additional relevant experience in avionics, landing gear, and utility systems. Career to date has spanned multiple levels of design and program phases, providing hands-on contribution for execution of tasks, to higher level team leadership and corporate strategy. Responsibilities have included management of in-house teams to strategic suppliers and joint ventures. Design experience ranges from component detail design to system architecture definition, including primary flight controls, spoiler systems, horizontal stabilizer trim systems, and slat/flap systems, incorporating both hydraulic and electrical technologies. Additional experience with mechanical, command-by-wire, and fly-by-wire architectures incorporating highly critical electronics. Embedded experience within design activities include system requirements capture using DOORS tool, flow-down, verification, and validation to the guidelines of SAE ARP4754A for highly integrated systems. Have also participated in component qualification programs, integrated flight control system test rig testing, aircraft ‘iron bird’ testing, and aircraft ground and flight testing. Project experience ranges from commercial proposal work and initial study phases, through the complete product development cycle to certification. Demonstrated capabilities in applying standardized project management, gated development processes, and earned value principles. Have also worked to support customer service engineering and product support.
Certification experience includes the preparation of the certification data package/documentation, presentations to certification authorities, and participation/lead in witnessed certification testing with the authorities. Have supported certification efforts in both systems and structural fields, including damage tolerance certification of flight critical actuators. New development program with updated technology relative to the existing Gulfstream G650 platform. Major equipment includes the primary and spoiler actuation system, horizontal stabilizer actuation system, and actuation electronics. Actuation technology includes electrohydraulic, electromechanical, and electrical back-up hydraulic actuation. Responsibilities include complete oversight of the engineering aspect of the program, including technical solution, engineering resources, development schedule, and engineering development budget. Responsibilities also include implementation of company goals in terms of technology re-use and cost, and adherence to Parker System Design and Development Process. Technical focal for customer with regards to all project and technical aspects. Major equipment includes FBW pilot controls for roll, pitch, and yaw axes, secondary control modules, horizontal stabilizer trim actuator, and horizontal stabilizer control unit. Oversight of system and product development team consisting of system, design, reliability/safety, stress, and project engineers. Responsible for complete development including high level requirements capture, requirements allocation, design, analysis, electrical/structural interface, and supplier technical management.

Responsible for the requirements, design, integration and certification of all mechanical components provided for the Bombardier CRJ Series 700 and Series 900 secondary flight control system. Major equipment provided includes horizontal stabilizer trim actuator, multi-function spoiler PCU, ground spoiler actuator and ground spoiler selector valve. Responsibilities include customer interface, partner/supplier design review, integration with various structural and system suppliers on the program, and preparation of the certification data package (design compliance report, type approval test report, structural integrity test plan, fatigue/damage tolerance verification report, etc.). Responsible for in-service mechanical engineering support for the Bombardier Global Express primary and secondary flight controls, and slat/flap systems. Major equipment provided includes primary surface PCU, horizontal stabilizer trim actuator, multi-function spoiler PCU, ground spoiler actuator, ground spoiler selector valve, and slat/flap actuation system. Responsibilities include resolution of service issues and re-certification of modifications (design compliance report addendum). Responsible for re-certification of complete Global Express primary and secondary flight controls, and slat/flap systems on the Global 5000 derivative aircraft. Responsibilities include on-site customer support during definition, build, pre-flight and certification phases. Responsibilities also include preparation of certification data package (design compliance report addendum).
Design and specification of a hydraulic test rig emulating an aircraft primary control axis as part of a government subsidized FBW research and development program. The integrated system test rig includes aircraft representative back-up structure, control surface, and electro-hydraulic servo-actuators (modified from flightworthy units to suit application).
Participation in engineering team representing Thales for new business development, including several presentations to major airframe manufacturers on system design and integration capabilities; successes include subsequent receipt of RFI, RFP, leading to contract. Participation on several proposal teams for the supply of integrated flight control systems (prime integrator) as mechanical systems lead; including on-sight representation to potential customers. Promoted to manager of new mechanical systems department in January 2004.
