Research Scientist, Project Lead, Design Engineer, and Safety Specialist

Led R&D efforts on novel oilfield products / technologies based on Materials Science, and Chemistry; emphasis on surfactants, polymers, lubricants, thermal management, and HS&E.

Developed formulations for downhole machinery lubrication, and silicone rubber packaging materials to protect downhole electronics; devised process / equipment designs w.r.t electroless composite coatings. Assignments involved initiating and executing projects using the Stage Gate process (including business & IP analysis), & leading cross-functional teams of up to 12 people.

Worked closely with manufacturing personnel of two product lines, to understand how lab-based product development needs to be translated into full-scale manufacturing.

Mentored an intern and several colleagues, managed several collaborations. Served as Safety Champion for facility, provided safety training, implemented Hazard Risk Assessments (HRAs) / Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), & company-wide lab / manufacturing safety policy formulation / revisions. Led initiative to promote policies pertaining to safe industrial use of nanomaterials.

Submitted over 30 ideas to Baker Hughes invention database. Co-authored 4 trade secrets, 1 patent application, 1 poster, and 2 conference proceedings.

McGill University, Montreal, Canada 2011

Postdoctoral Researcher, Mentor, Technical Communicator

Researched nanomaterials and polymers for therapeutic applications, and interactions between carbon nanomaterials and bacteria. Mentored students, wrote proposals. Advised a graduate student on electrodeposition of alginate polymeric gel coatings on metal substrates, co-authored a paper.

PRAXAIR, INC., Tonawanda, NY, USA 2009 – 2011

Development Specialist, Project Lead, Market Research Analyst

Focused on market research, voice of the customer (VOC), FMEA, product development / project management related to biomedical / therapeutic gas delivery devices and sensors.

Managed design and development of a medical gas delivery device, through inputs from customers, vendors / manufacturing partners, and the stage gate process. Enabled critical business decisions related to respiratory therapeutic chemicals and cryopreservation technologies through market research / process economics studies. Familiarized with antimicrobial technologies, air purification techniques, and medical regulations.

Evaluated emerging technologies in collaboration with start-up companies and academic / institutional partners. Designed a medical gas-sensing device, mentored an intern (subsequently hired by the company) in developing related prototype. Contributed to hiring decisions.

GARLOCK SEALING TECHNOLOGIES, Palmyra, NY, USA 2007 – 2009

Senior Product Engineer, Process Scale-up Specialist, Project Lead

Focused on developing new products and related processes pertaining to the fluid sealing industry.

Optimized and scaled up novel Therma-PurTM ultra-high temperature gasket product formulations (commercialized recently). Formulated and scaled up “green” fluoropolymeric lubricant coatings for dynamic pump seals in keeping with evolving environmental regulations. Researched proprietary sealing formulations incorporating silicone materials.

Applied established testing methods (e.g. ASTM, DIN) and developed new tests / equipment for evaluating static and dynamic seals. Managed collaborations with industrial and academic partners. Liaison with sales personnel. Contributed to recruitment and hiring decisions.

RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, Troy, NY, USA 2001 – 2007

Interdisciplinary Doctoral Researcher, Chemical Engineering

Specialized in the science and application of industrial carbons, nanomaterials and polymers. Led a successful inter-university research collaboration with McGill University (Montreal, Canada).

Researched characterization, applications and biocompatibility of polymers / nanomaterials for tissue engineering / biomedical implants / drug delivery, resulting in recommendations for further work, a patent, and global press releases. Established, equipped a new cell biology lab.

Studied the potential impact / toxicology / safety of nanomaterials on human health and the environment and related mitigation, using a novel combination of materials science and biology.
