Final Year Project

The project dealt with the development of an innovative transportation system which is powered by a dc-motor drive. It requires user input such as the movement of your body mass, leaning forwards and backwards were controls for the velocity of the board.

Gyroscopes and Accelerometers were used to measure the tilt. Sensor Drift compensation was done with the help of filters. The control of orientation and tilt was done by a PID control algorithm implemented using a microcontroller. The controller stabilized the system automatically according to the driver’s position, to maintain the tilt at zero and the orientation parallel to the ground.

The idea for our project evolved as we students needed to walk to our college and wanted a better way to get around. Bicycles and electric vehicles like Segway are a viable replacement. But not everyone likes to ride a cycle to college and Segways are very expensive. So we thought of developing an electric self-balancing board. Our project started with a vision of the future, one where fast, fun, electric transportation makes getting around our cities a joy. Then we spent a lot of time putting together the technologies we could buy and learn in developing the board.
