SYNOPSIS
A well-rounded technologist who cut
his teeth in a cannery, fabricating
industrial machine frameworks and
flow-paths and cataloging every
device, job and station on every line.
Broadcasting has helped cement
many technical skills and fresh
perspectives, but I find I want more of
a leadership role than my billet
allows and the path of broadcasting
technician to technical leadership is
narrow because the field is, frankly,
tiny.
EARTH STATIONS
Television stations need earth station
antennas with solid signals and tight
controls. KXTV's dishes were all in
some state of disrepair in 2002.
Supervising the installation of their
latest 3.7 meter Andrews receive dish,
identifying tasks, fielding bids,
selecting contractors and getting their
documentation lined up gave me a
solid feel for managing contractor
Tools
Layout and marking, drills, hammers, cutters, meters. Hand tools of many descriptions, including machine shop tooling
Spectrum analyzer, Oscilloscope, Hand held digital and analog meters, soldering iron, soldering rework station
Broadcasting
Video, audio, radio, robotics and networking. Broad spectrum immersion in live television and radio broadcasting with emphasis on transparency of operations. Component and system level troubleshooting.
Project Management
Blueprint reading. Multiple subcontractor budgeting, scheduling and supervision. Engineering surveys and estimation.
Prepare documentation of installed resources using spreadsheet, database and CAD applications.
Cable construction of many types using crimping, soldering or swaging including video, RF, audio, multi-conductor machine control and interface, serial communications and power cables.
Monitoring, calibration and troubleshooting of telecommunications signal propagation, flow and testing of same
Design, programming and implementation of microprocessor circuits for industrial control applications using Embedded Control project boards. CHEAP AND EFFECTIVE
Pushing cool attic cool into a media center eliminated predictable yearly down time for critical conference room presentation equipment for a total price of $15 (plus duct tape) and gave the Sales team full presentation resources year round. BOTTLENECK BREAKDOWN
When KXTV's only Earth Station Up-link lost motion control, having the ability to isolate the 3- phase 230V elevation motor as the only failed part in the AC drive circuit and have it picked up, rebuilt, returned and reinstalled within 24 hours saved the company from lengthy and costly up-link rental fee to satisfy their network obligations while the earth station was diagnosed and repaired.
KEYWORD OVERFLOW FOR SKILLS

SCRIPTING
A recurring scene of confusion between two departments was eliminated with Windows Scripting. Once product log delivery was automated, both departments spent the recovered time focusing on their core job skills.

timetables and communicating
schedules and changes. Seeing to
the building of the dish and proofing
its drive and control systems brought
the project to a close.
TEACHER OF THE
YEAR
KXTV's Teacher of the Year
presentation at Sacramento's Esquire
IMax theater is run entirely from a
Macbook, some cobbled together
interface hardware, 2 house-made
100 foot audio snakes, an HDMI
converter and a small PA system. This
simple roadshow brings News10
prestige within their community.
Repeated prestige brings repeated
returns, as far as KXTV's Sales
department is concerned and that's
why this goes in the "great PR for zero
budget" category.
VIEWERS FOR
NOTHING
Nothing engages viewers more than a
sense of family, so why not pack up
Mark S Allen and family in a client's
billboard wrapped motor-home and
send them up the Pacific Coast
Highway with a satellite field crew?
We'll have them push live hits and
packages all day long from parts
historic and majestic until they run
out of redwoods, plastering our
client's billboard motor home all over
the airwaves. After a week trailing the
Allen clan up Highways One and 101,
ratings had bumped up
tremendously, our client was running
out of vacation vans for trips of their
own and management was thrilled
because ownership thought they
were doing a cracking good job.
