Hired on the North American sunflower breeding team to support conventional and molecular breeding through computational and database support, and project management of field acitivities. Engaged in phenotypic and marker-assisted selection in inbred nurseries, managed field experiments, and directed temporary employees and interns through all breeding activities.

Key Contributions:

Innovative analytic pipeline. Tested and helped improve development of spatial and categorical analysis pipeline for quantitative traits. Added programming in both R and ASREML languages.

Detail-oriented data analysis. Performed multi-year, multi-environment, and spatial analyses of experiments, engaging in data curation, statistical software programming, and reporting.

Cutting edge predictive algorithms. Pioneered use of prediction methodology in sunflower. Analyzed data from multiple sources to associate desired traits to marker profiles across entire genome. Machine learning models used: PLS, ridge regression BLUP, random forest model, and combined methods. Compared multiple statistical approaches in the same dataset. Results are planned to be submitted for journal publication.

Applied project management. Designed new system for sampling seed chips and for extracting desired seed. Quadrupled screening capacity in nurseries while adding minimal cost.

Efficient and accurate project stewardship. Set-up field maps, entry lists, sourced seed, and advanced pedigrees for multiple local nurseries (70 acres) and in remote locations (Hawaii and Chile). Coordinated collection of phenotypic data in hybrid and nursery trials. Led seed fill, planting, pollination and harvest activities.
