Sr. Systems Engineer and IT Manager at 21st Century Insurance (January 1999 - January 2010)
Sr Unix/Linux. Systems Engineer. As one of the Principle Team Leads, I was involved in managing, supporting, and migrating from HP9000 to IBM Power Technologies. I also participated and lead a team in Benchmarking all primary mid-range database applications at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, CA. The HP Engineers were amazed at how quickly our database and application servers were redeployed at HP Labs using Ignite and Omniback backups to quickly setup and begin our benchmark testing. Additional accomplishments while at 21st Century, included introducing Linux as a viable midrange alternative for testing applications and supporting the larger production infrastructure. The transition was so successful that
we eventually migrated from standalone systems to VMWare. Our greatest achievement as a Team was to achieve 99.9% uptime for all mid-range and mainframe systems throughout our data center. Experience at Ingersoll Rand inludes the latest IBM, HP, Redhat, Oracle Technologies current as of 2014. Others Technologies include: IBM pSeries with Power6 and Power7 hardware management, AIX 5.x, 6.x and 7.x OS Administration, IBM Logical Partitioning, VIO Micro-Partitioning and NIM Management, WebSphere v5, IBM MQ Series v.6, IBM Tivoli Identity Manager v4.6, EMC Clarion and Symmetrix Supt., SUN Solaris 9.0, HP-UX 11.0, Redhat Linux AS v2.1 & AS v4, SUSE Linux 8.4 & 9.4, HP c7000 w/ Proliant 685c & 485c Blade Servers, HP Proliant GL 380 & 580 w/ ILO, VMWare 3.5, Oracle v.9 & v.10 and RAC, UDB, Netbackup, Unicenter, Apache, TCP/IP, and Unix/linux Bash, Posix, Bourne, Korn, and Perl Shell Scripting.
IT Manager at Tyco International (May 1996 - January 1999)
During my tenure at Jason-Kendall-LTP, a subsidiary of Tyco International, I was actively involved in introducing new networking, e-commerce, client-server, and database technologies into our company’s infrastructure. Our small IT Staff worked together to refresh our midrange technology and introduced HP9000 Servers running Universe DBMS. The implementation project included customization of the companies distribution software running on Pick Basic and included extensive 4GL query support and customization. Other new technologies at the time included Managed Routing technology and Windows NT Server support: Applications support included a Custom Sales and Product Distribution System, Internet Proxy Services, Server Clustering, Appletalk / Macintosh Services, Windows Print Services, client-server based applications, backup archiving services. and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). As a result of a corporate merger to Tyco, my duties included transferring all data processing functions to our new corporate headquarters in Massachusetts. The goal for this project required all department functions to move from one local system to a corporate system based on the East Coast. This required the introduction of van-switch technology using 100 base-t and TCP/IP achieving ultra high-speed data communications. During this period our database was converted from a Universe DBMS to a DEC/VMS Open database. The company is now performing all Order Entry, MRP, Distribution, and Accounting functions on this new corporate DEC / PRAXA Server. Other responsibilities included organizing numerous training sessions and classroom environments; programming and maintaining both new and old applications in Universe and Unix. Also, some programming projects included the use of Visual-basic, SQL Server, and DEC Cobol. Other customer proprietary systems were introduced and maintained. I was also responsible for purchasing hardware, software, and support contracts. My greatest accomplishment is the satisfaction in knowing how this work was achieved – through personal involvement, friendly interaction, and knowing that all things are possible
