Drydocks World, Dubai February 1987- October 2013

Drydocks World is one of the world’s largest ship repair and ship building firm with more than 12000 employees and 1500 system users. It has also business units in Singapore and Indonesia. A full-fledged bespoke ERP bridges various functions of the shipyard, attains operational efficiency by defining and automating processes spanning across Ship repair, Conversion, New ship building, Rig building, Offshore services, Marine Services and Ship lift making routine tasks easier and faster by seamless flow of information. I was one of the key architects in designing the ERP and managed the project from due diligence to rollout for various business units of the organization.

I was also played a significant role in formulating IT strategic plans, policies, disaster recovery plan, information security compliances, conducting user satisfaction surveys and leading various internal and external IT audits.

Project Details – Role Project Manager

I.Mariner ERP – Drydocks World Dubai

Environment: Oracle 11g, Oracle IDS, TOAD, Power Builder, MS Project, UNIX & Windows

Mariner is in-house developed Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP) for Ship Repair and New Building. The system was developed on Oracle 11g database and Oracle integrated development Suite (IDS-10i) on HP-Unix platform. The 3-tier application logic was encapsulated using Oracle Forms and Reports

The ERP integrates various functions of the shipyard by attaining operational efficiency by defining and automating processes spanning across repair & new building. The ERP covers all the functional area of the business like

Enquiry management – Prospective enquires, analyze chances of materializing

Estimation and discount projection, Contract management

Material management - including generating bill of materials from the engineering software Foran and integrate the same with ERP, Requisition, Quotation analysis, Procurement, receipts & returns, supplier performance analysis and discrepancy monitoring.

Finance Module – Chart of accounts, AP, AR, Cash Management, GL

HRMS Module – Recruitment, Staffing, Leave, Payroll, Appraisals

Asset Management, Industrial Clinic, Safety, Quality.

The detailed study of the system is initiated and ‘As-Is’ document of automated and manual systems were prepared. Using these the ‘To-Be’ document and proto types were prepared and the same were presented to various functional groups and stakeholders. Entity diagrams and detailed Functional specifications were later developed along with Test cases and scenarios. All together there were 2000+ transactional forms and reports.

The business process reengineering and improvements of functionalities, migration and remodeling of data from the legacy system to relational database were also undertaken during the project. Also the entire operation of the shipyard were enhanced by applying best practices.

Since the project was undertaken on a phased manner both the systems, ERP & legacy system, a pipeline is established using Power Builder and Intercall to synchronize the data on both platforms.

II.Oracle Database Upgrade 10g to 11g

The system was initially started with Oracle 10g and after the implementation it was upgraded to 11g. Since it was a bespoke ERP, all the modules and process were thoroughly tested for compatibility and adherence. This was taken as a separate project.

III.Mariner ERP – Drydocks World Singapore & Indonesia

Environment: Oracle 11g, Oracle IDS, MS Project, TOAD, UNIX & Windows

The above ERP was implemented in the organization’s business units in Singapore & Indonesia.

Quite a few process were reengineered to meet the operational culture of the land

Further enhancements were added to align with taxation and other statutory requirements.

Migration of data from various engineering software and Oracle Financials and Excel sheets were also undertaken during the project.

IV.Online Procurement System

Environment: Oracle 11g, Oracle IDS, MS Project, 3rd Party Web Application, Unix & Windows

The material management module from the bespoke ERP is integrated with third party web application – Tejari to have uniform pricing and procurement.

Material Requisitions registered in the ERP are categorized into coded (available in stock) and non-coded

Non-Coded requisitions are automatically uploaded to the web application and quotations are received.

These quotes are channeled to ERP and price comparisons are made and prospective quotes are later published in the web applications,

Once the orders are finalized same is downloaded to ERP and the purchase orders are made through the ERP system.

Project Details – Role Senior Systems Analyst

I.New Ship Building – Process Streamlining

Environment: Oracle 11g, Oracle IDS, 3rd Party Web Application, Unix & Windows

To meet the customer expectations and standardize the new ship building processes, new functionalities were added and exiting processes were further streamlined. These enhancements were based on the study conducted by the engineering team on various ship yards. Following are the summary of the initiatives undertaken.

Extract design data from third party engineering software packages like Foran and Ship constructor and create a detailed work break down structure in ERP

There are thousands of spool joints in a given AutoCAD drawing. These joints are captured in Excel sheets and the same is uploaded to the ERP with unique identification and each stages of such spools are tracked.

When jobs are to be coordinated among multiple trades/work groups, the manual documents transmissions are automated to keep track of job movements across trades/work groups. Further enhanced were added by providing email notification at various levels.

Facility to update the progress of job at each stages of Job delivery/ receipt process. The jobs are done at various trades, when the completion details moves from one point to other the progress were updated. Project Managers and Invoicers were provided with the View access for better monitoring and billing of the jobs.

The Request for Assistance from various trades is automated. The Manpower Allocation, Production Control directive, Request for assistance and Request for allocation were tracked using this process.

During the change of shifts, Supervisor/Foreman used to leave manual note on the physical progress of the planned tasks. Also describes any emergency operations or additional tasks undertook during the shift. This processes were fully automated process to have advantage of monitoring the activity by senior team and do further.

II.Estimation & Contracting

Environment: Sybase, Power Builder, SCO Unix & Excel Macros

Transformed a traditional character based system running on legacy database to graphical user interface module.

Enquires received for ship repair and ship building are categorized and prospective ones are directed to prepare detailed estimation.

Variety of built-in modules were added to automate the estimation process like steel and pipe spool computations, labor and overhead costs etc.

Graphical discount projection modules are added to compute the impact on cost and profit margins on the fly.

Once the orders are confirmed, contracts are created and preliminary work structures are created for various production departments.

The processes were reengineered for optimization and provide competitive advantage in preparing detailed and accurate analysis, ease of usage and better look and feel.

The migration and remodeling of data from the legacy system to relational database were undertaken during the project.

III.Migrate Pascal System to Prime Information

Environment: Apple Pascal, Prime Information, Info/Basic

Led the design, development & implementation of entire ship yard modules in Prime Information Proprietary Database using a 4GL development Tool, INFO/BASIC. Migrated data from Pascal Based System to PI-Open. Performed comprehensive graphical reporting in Excel by extracting data from the central system using Excel macros. Software Application system for Ship Repair and associated modules.

Project Details – Role Analyst Programmer

As a software developer I was involved in the application development for the various functional domains of the organizations such as Engineering, HRMS, Financial, Inventory management & Procurement, integration of 3rd party engineering software. I have extensively used Oracle integrated developer suite (IDS), Oracle PL-SQL, Power Builder, Sybase SQL, Visual Basic, Excel macros, Pascal, Fortran, PI-Open 4GL etc.
