Responsible for leading RF Hardware design for Wireless Test Stations (WTS122UR and WTS122FT, both are in production currently) under Elevate Test Framework. Both test stations were designed for testing UEs with LTE capabilities, where WTS122UR is targeting LTE FDD technology, and WTS122FT is targeting LTE TDD technology, although the RF hardware was designed to operated from 400MHz to 6GHz, -5dBm of transmit power and 30dBm received power, and would be capable for handling other technologies like GSM and WCDMA. Some of the tasks were done while in Spirent include:
Project planning for the RF board (mainly for WTS122FT), came out with a challenging but reasonable planning, and executed in time for product release
RF design analysis, which includes cascaded analysis and worst case scenarios analysis
RF parts selection for meeting design specification
Reviewed, modified and updated RDS (Requested Design Specifications) based on realistic data, 3GPP, 36.141 was also considered as part of the specification for design
Arranged schematic and layout reviews with team and manufacture partner oversea for finalizing and implementing the design, contributed ideas and suggestions to avoid potential future problem
Worked with procurement team to secure parts, especially long lead time parts
Worked with software/firmware engineers for preparing expected software commands
Created, modified and updated DVT (Design Verification Tests) planning and report
Achieved test Automation by creating Itest test cases, and used for both DVT and Manufacture tests
Modified and updated MTR (Manufacture Tests Requirement) documentation, and provided to Test Engineers to follow when testing production released RF boards
Solving all the RF related problems that found during the prototyping and production.
Found software bugs and providing suggestions/solutions
Helped Test Engineers in setting up test stations for better accuracy
Investigated cost saving solutions
Participated in other projects' schematic/layout review, and provided suggestions and feedbacks
The hardware designs were all done correctly as expected every spin, new features were the main reason for board spin.
Harris Corporation. RF Design Engineer, Rochester, NY Jun. 2009 - Jun. 2014
Worked with another RF Design Engineer as a Power Amplifier RF design team on Harris LMR (Land Mobile radio) Unity XG-100M Mobile radio (a 50W 136MHz to 870MHz mobile radio) since the beginning of the design phase; went through some board spins before it was introduced to production. Since then, took over all the responsibilities to ensure all the RF performances (both transmitter and receiver sides of the XG-100M) were maintained. Besides that, also took over all the responsibilities in supporting Unity XG-100P Portable radio (a 5W 136MHz to 870MHz portable radio) that was also in production. After better yields were achieved in both products, cost saving project kicked in, responsibilities got expanded to redesigning RF boards for both XG-100M and XG-100P for cost saving. Have since saved about 37% and 9% of the material cost on RF boards for XG-100M and XG-100P respectively.
Some of works were done in Harris include, but not limited to:
Using Microwave Office and ADS to design and simulate a Harmonic filter for XG-100M, then implementing into the board and tweaking for better performances
Modifying the T/R switch for better isolation for XG-100M
Redesigning TGC loop circuitry for XG-100M to ensure ETSI specifications were met
Modifying the circuitries in XG-100M for accurate VSWR and Temperature cutbacks
Schematic and layout checking each time before board spin, to avoid design or layout mistakes
Providing Test and Software Engineers suitable test methods for better and more effective automatic testings
Choosing the right ESD protector and testing XG-100M to make sure it can handle ESD as specified
Discovering and fixing EMI issues existed in XG-100M before FCC approval and production release
Working with other individuals such as software engineers, test engineers, drafters and engineering specialists as a team to ensure all the deadlines were met from prototype design to production release
Preparation for FCC submission and approval
Fixing RF related production issues in both XG-100M and XG-100P due to marginal design, defective parts and operator errors, such as Harmonics, ACPR, Sensitivity, ACR, IMR and Synthesizer Lock. Most of these problems emerged after higher volume of production. Providing guidelines and tips to technicians for quicker and easier troubleshoots. Acting fast in providing suitable solutions to factory problems for ensuring shipments were not delayed, as well as maintaining product performance
Solving RF related field issues for both XG-100M and XG-100P under time pressure
Applying Lean Six Sigma tool in analyzing production data. Using statistical tools such as control chart and time series chart to analyze the test data; identifying possible root-causes for some production failures with tools such as DoE
Helping Test Engineers to find station related issues that causes false failures in the boards or radios
Finding and verifying alternatives for obsolescent parts
Doing Cascade Analysis on receiver performance factor such as Noise Figure and Gain.
Self-designing new couplers to replace original couplers in both XG-100M and XG-100P, and one more for Lower VHF 100W radio; redesigning both T/R switch and it's driver circuits for XG-100M; working with buyers and suppliers to get better pricing on some of the custom parts such as saw filters, crystal filters and TCXO chips as part of cost saving efforts
Mini-Circuits, Inc. Test Engineer, Brooklyn, NY Jun. - Aug. 2008
Tested various types of RF, IF, and microwave components such as Mixers, I & Q Modulators, Demodulators, Frequency Multipliers, Directional & Bi-directional Couplers, Power Splitters, Phase Shifters on different parameters such as IP3, Conversion Loss, Isolation, Return Loss, Directivity, and Temperature using equipments such as spectrum analyzers, power meters, power generators and network analyzers. Assisted Design Engineers in testing, verifying and designing new design prototypes.
