M.Sc-Project
The following project has been done in Dep.of Applied geology, guindy campus,university of madras,Chennai,Tamilnadu.
Landslide Hazard Zonation Mapping using Remotesensing and GIS in Kotagiri block of Nilgiri District,Tamilnadu.
The landslide hazard zone map is created through the integration of thematic layers such as land use, drainage density, slope, geomorphology, and lineament density. These themes have direct influence on triggering landslide in the study area. Suitable ranks and weights are assigned to the themes based on their influence on the landslide hazard zone. Overlying the various thematic layers in the GIS environment, the areas are divided in to five zones according to the intensity of landslides.
The outcome of this study will be useful to the end users especially for taking up various development activities in the Kotagiri block, which is facing the issue of rapid land use/land cover changes due to population exploration and urbanization. The salient conclusions of this study are;
1.The high Susceptibility to landslides of the Kotagiri block is mainly due to the complex Geomorphological setting of the area.
2.The most of the Roads in the area are passing through the highly vulnerable area. The Southern part of the study area is highly prone for landslide hazard when compared to other parts.
3.The Future activities in the study area have to shift into very low hazard region.
