To Whom It May Concern:

This correspondence serves as a letter of reference for Ms. Marcie Meagher, whom I had the pleasure to be associated with for a period of several years while we were both employed at the Ohio Primary Care Association (OPCA).

OPCA is the statewide membership association of the Federally Qualified Health Centers. It had an operating budget of $2.7 million and a peak staff complement of about a dozen individuals. I was the executive director for nine years.

Marcie first came to OPCA as the Office Manager and what a wonderful addition to the staff she was. We reviewed over 100 resumes and interviewed about 10-15 people for the position. I can remember as clearly as if it were yesterday when the deputy director came into my office and said “I found her.” Indeed she had. That was how I first met Marcie.

Marcie started as Office Manager in 2002 and began making a noticeable difference within the first week. Her organizational skills are excellent and were greatly appreciated. We were primarily federally-funded as a consequence pushed a lot of paperwork. I can’t tell you how many times I would need a documentation of some sort while working alone on a weekend and there it was, filed neatly, dated and in order – thanks to Marcie.

We maintained a sizeable membership base which resulted in a lot of phone traffic. Marcie was always very pleasant and went out of her way to help callers with any issue they might have. If she didn’t have an answer to a question, she would find someone who did. The staff loved her. As a boss, I did too because she’s diligent, absolutely reliable and honest, and is willing to sacrifice for the organization. She never stops working! She was the best office manager OPCA ever had, and I dare say ever will have.

As good as she was as officer manager (you know by now she is highly educated), I felt Marcie was still underutilized. When the position of Director of Training and Conference Planning opened up in 2004 I immediately thought of promoting her into that position. (Parenthetically, at that same time my deputy director came into my office and said I should think about giving her the position.) Her performance in that position was also outstanding. In fact, she received nothing but excellent evaluations during the entire time I was at OPCA.

OPCA puts on a fairly large statewide conference every May (150 people or so), a finance directors’ conference in November as well as a good number of training and technical assistance sessions both in Columbus and regionally throughout the state during the year. (We also jointly sponsored a huge five-state conference in Kansas City in 2004.) With the exception of identifying speakers and topics, Marcie was responsible for everything else – from costing and pricing the conference, negotiating with hotels, picking menus, arranging speaker’s travel and overnight accommodations, negotiating with exhibitors, brochure development from layout through printing and mailing, arranging for rental equipment, loading power point presentations – you name it and she did it.

We always quantified our attendees’ evaluations to track our effectiveness through time and invariably were rated in the 9.7 to 9.9 on a 10 point scale. Marcie literally began planning the following year’s session the week after to current was completed. She organized a staff “post mortem” immediately following to see what we had done well and what could be improved upon while the event was still fresh in our minds.

Marcie is smart and an extremely hardworking and loyal employee. She is also one of the genuinely nicest people I have ever met. I have never known her to gossip or to speak unkindly of anyone. In addition to her skills, of which there are many, what really sets Marcie apart is her personality. She is always positive and upbeat and brightens up a room when she walks in. (I usually got to the office early, and would often smile to myself as I listened to her arrive and greet all the staff in turn.) She’s wonderful for morale building.

Let me state this as plainly and explicitly as I can. I have been working professionally for nearly 30 years and can state unequivocally Marcie is one to top staff I have ever had the pleasure to encounter. You should hire Marcie Meagher. You will always be glad you did, and you will never regret it. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Joseph E. Doodan

Dear Prospective Employer:

I met Marcie Meagher in the spring of 2002 when she interviewed to become the Ohio Primary Care Association’s Office Manager. She impressed me immediately with her organizational skills, preparedness, eloquence, clear thinking and excellent attitude. We called her back for a second interview that day and quickly hired her. As you no doubt have experienced yourself, some people make a very good impression during their interview, but never meet up to the expectations set in the interview. This was not the case with Ms. Meagher; she met and exceeded all of our expectations.

In large part, this is because Ms. Meagher is very honest with herself and employers about what she can accomplish; what she enjoys doing; and, what she would like to do in the future. When she works on a project, she is very organized; makes sure she understands the required outcome; works well with others to accomplish the goal; and, always strives to turn out a high quality product. One area in particular where she exhibited strong aptitude and interest was in seminar and conference planning.

We expanded her duties to include more of this type work and she was later promoted to be the association’s Director of Training and Conference Planning. At that time, I was the association’s Deputy Director and had the pleasure of having Ms. Meagher as a direct report. She did a fantastic job in this role. Prior to taking on the role, she spent a lot of time with her predecessor learning the job duties and best practices for the role. As her comfort level increased, she continued to do the things that worked well and improved the areas that needed improved. Very quickly, she was not only accomplishing the work, but doing it better than it had been done previously.

While all of this reflects the type and quality of work fulfilled by Ms. Meagher, it does not speak to her personality. I have hired and supervised nearly 100 people during my working life and she is the one person that I would want to work for me or work with me no matter where I was employed. She is consistently positive, pleasant, exhibits generosity of spirit and genuinely cares about others. The feedback from the association’s membership and business partners was almost entirely affirmative in nature. I was recently meeting with someone who interacts frequently with the association and he remarked how she was always so positive and a pleasure to work with. She contributed greatly to improving the image of the association to outside stakeholders.

I wish Ms. Meagher only the best in her future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Heather M. Burdette
