Interests
Originally from the UK I first travelled to Australia on my own when
I was 18 for a short period of time before going to University and have
continued to return ever since, on my most recent trip in 2013 I then made
the decision to stay in Australia. I like to keep busy and I find staying
fit is a great way of doing this, which has lead me to compete in number of
sports throughout my life. I also find sport is a great way of socialising.
I also like to play the Ukulele as I feel I can experiment with the
creative side of my mind and I consider music a way of impacting
individuals' moods.
Professional Experience
Wickes DIY Marketing team - United Kingdom based DIY retailer - Customer
Service Advisor: 2007 - 2008
Marketing Communications: 2008 -2010
Wickes is a company that relies heavily on marketing due a competitive
market with a large number of companies in the UK trying to satisfy the DIY
and trade market. Therefore brand management, media relations, product
launches and advertising are all essential to stay on top of competitors.
Starting for Wickes as a customer service advisor I quickly became
interested in the marketing aspect of the company and my interests allowed
me to become part of the marketing team. I Became involved at the start of
a campaign named "Wickes, it's got our name on it" which attempted and
achieved to boost its reputation in the quality of their products as well
as selling contemporary designed kitchen and bathroom suites.
Work Accomplishments:
. Developed and launched a series seasonal of Wickes catalogs, assisted in
web marketing and launched first Wickes TV commercials which was a
success campaign that propelled sales beyond our target
. Promoted market launch of multiple new products, for example the 'choc
box' that is used for safely enclosing electrical boxes. Identified many
marketing opportunities and researched new product possibilities
. Designed point of sale signs and customer training brochures which helped
products sell more effectively.
. Performed ongoing customer/market research and profiling to identify
market needs and wants - from this developed a struggling delivery
service into a company which now specialises in next day delivery
Project Accomplishments: Brunel University final year project - 2011
. In final year project as part of my marketing module teams of four had to
design and invent a company selling a product or creating a business that
teams thought would succeed. After completing the task, showing our
design to the head of the business school, module leaders and the rest of
year via a presentation, as well as hold event in a lecture hall where
all groups were given one table to best show their product
. Decided and developed the idea of a company sports energy drink that was
both healthy in terms of containing fruits, minerals and vitamins, also
containing protein for muscular gain, without the feeling of 'heaviness'
that some protein shakes can give you
. Designed promotions, product packaging, website, profit and loss
accounts, name of product, target markets, 5 year plan, competitive
analysis and how we would market the product
. Created concept like it was a real product then used Microsoft PowerPoint
slideshow presentation to show product concept at the end
. Advanced through a series of rounds and became runners up across the
whole year old business students behind a "shisha bar" concept
Selected Accomplishments:
. Sport is also a very important part of my life, I played basketball
throughout my secondary school, however a passion of mine lies in Table
Tennis where I have competed in National Championships for England
. I am a level 2 qualified fitness instructor, a course I attended during
my university degree. Also I have gained a level 1 football coach
qualification certificate and a level 8 football referee. This requires
strong decision making, often strong communication skills and conflict
resolution, as on a sports field there will often be players/supporters
who disagree with any decision you make.
. Have a full clean driving license
. Compatibility with all aspects of MS office, as well as SPSS software
used during statistic work throughout my degree
Other experiences:
. In my final year at university I nominated myself and was elected to
become table tennis chairman and representative at Brunel and gained
over 80 members (2011) by promoting the club and sport at a "Fresher's
fayre'
. While being the chairman of the club I organized many events throughout
the year and also took a team of 8 players to the national championships
held in Nottingham. This role included coaching other members of the
club as well as gaining a 3rd Brunel Table Tennis Team into a local
league where I had to sit with the chairman of the board as well as
other members of the committee and prepared and presented a talk why I
thought Brunel should be entered into this league. The Brunel 3rd's are
now in Division 4 after starting in Division 7 of the 'Wembley and
Harrow league' and continue to make progress after I entered them into
the league 3 years ago.
. I also worked as a carpenter for over 2 years after I finished
university as I found an interest for creative thinking by building and
designing furniture. This gave me skills to work for long periods of
time on my feet and under pressure balancing demands of a number of
customer needs in timed conditions
. After completing my degree I worked part time as a bartender at Mokoko
cocktail bar in St. Albans from 2012 - 1014 - Mokoko was voted UK's best
cocktail bar in 2013 and best spirits bar 2012. Teamwork is a necessity
needing good organisation in a busy high quality bar keeping a high
standard of work maintaining attention to detail throughout every task.
Designed own cocktail "Just Like Me" - became a best seller on the menu
and still included on the menu to this day.
. Mokoko cocktail bar owners also owned a retail boutique shop in St.
Albans named 'Tomoka' where I was asked to work at weekends. This
required me to learn detailed knowledge in a short period of time about
a number of high quality whiskeys, rums, gins and other spirits to sell.
. On my second visit to Australia I worked for an advanced forester
service in 'Douglas Daly region' in the Northern Territory individually
planting over 100,000 trees in a four month period. This often required
levels of motivation and perseverance as in a small team of six people
spending months together on end we had to find a way to complete our
given targets and finish planting the trees before the season was over
