Engineer

SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE

Devin is a Drilling Engineer who completed a degree in Petroleum Systems Engineering from the University of Regina in

2010. Devin acquired drilling and completion rig experience while attending University. Prior to graduation he enrolled in

a 16 month co-operative education internship with Husky Energy that was spent with the Thermal Heavy Oil Operations

team and the Drilling East team working in the Lloydminster Heavy Oil and Gas District.

After graduation; Devin started working in Saudi Arabia as a field engineer drilling underbalanced gas wells in the Haradh

field. Since returning to Canada, he has worked primarily in Oil Sands including a winter field position with MEG, and

2.5 years with Nexen. Devin has also done short term work for Suncor in their deep gas team and worked on specialty

projects for Benchmark.

Devin enjoys a challenge and working in a high pressure environment. Devin has both field and office experience and is

currently seeking a field/office drilling, completion or abandonment engineering position where he would be able to apply

and increase his experience and engineering skills. Due to international and Canadian experience; Devin is competent

working with both metric and imperial/oilfield units.

Detailed Experience:

Devin has spent the last two and a half years working in Nexen’s Oil Sands team as a drilling engineer. He started

working as a wellsite drilling engineer overseeing operations on two SAGD slant rigs; one located in Kinosis, the other in

Long Lake. During the winter; Devin was assigned to the Delineation program where he assisted wellsite supervisors

with daily reports, calculations and helped document & solve any major issues. Devin would return to the SAGD rigs

briefly before being brought into the office to plan the 2013/2014 winter delineation program. This project involved

drilling 181 core/strat/directional wells with 11 rigs across 5 different areas in 100 days. These wells had depths ranging

from, 230m (750 ft) up to 750m (2,500ft). It was deemed a huge success by all at Nexen, having set records for lowest

TRIF, Lowest NPT and fastest days/well; all while finishing under budget. After this, Devin was assigned to plan SAGD

infill wells in Long Lake.

In the spring of 2012; Suncor required additional manpower in their NEBC drilling team performing offset analysis and

data mining in the area adjacent to their Kobes/Altares blowout. This involved analyzing bit tour sheets, bit records,

cement/mud densities and casing string designs based on public data that could be attained through Accumap and

internal data from Wellview.

Benchmark has also utilized Devin in their office for special projects and busy times. He helped to drill, complete and

abandon a CO2 sequestration test well in central Alberta, plan slant wells, and cost estimation and engineering of a

client’s potential SAGD project. Devin also helped with the day-to-day drilling operations of a client’s wells in the Swan

Hills area.

Upon completion of Petroleum Systems Engineering degree from the University of Regina; Devin began working for

Sperry Drilling Services (Halliburton) in Saudi Arabia as a Geobalance Applications Well Site Drilling Engineer. He

worked in the Gwarh field on the Saudi Aramco underbalance coil tubing drilling (UB-CTD) project. This project

involved setting a whipstock in production casing/liner/tubing in a depleted gas well, milling a window and drilling

multiple horizontal legs attempting to intercept undrained layers of reservoir, while continuing to export produced gas

and condensate. Once the well was drilled it would be opened up and flow tested. Some key responsibilities involved

evaluation of drilling parameters, pressure deployment/undeployment of BHAs, preparation of daily reports & end of well

reports, as well as flow modeling, coil fatigue and lockup modeling.

During university Devin enrolled in a 16 month co-operative education internship with Husky Energy from May 2008 to

September 2009. The first 8 months of the internship were spent working with the Thermal Heavy Oil Operations team.

Primary duties involved evaluating performance of SAGD and CSS wells and steamflood patterns. Devin was also highly

involved with development plans for existing and future steam projects in the Lloydminster area. He worked with Sr. and

Jr. engineers to develop new SAGD startup procedures as well as reserves calculations and booking.

The last 8 months of the internship were spent with the Drilling East team working in the Lloydminster Heavy Oil and Gas

District. During this time, Husky had invested significant capital to evaluate new drilling technologies in order to lower

future drilling costs such as drilling with casing (DWC) and specialty mud systems such as aphrons and ultra-high low

shear rate viscosity (ULHSRV) mud. One of the most significant innovations was the development of Husky’s

hydrostatically controlled cement plug which was designed for cementing in the wormhole environments in heavy oil

reservoirs. This tool was designed by the unconventional drilling team and has increased the lost circulation cement plug

success rate from 20% to over 83% while severely reducing the cost.

Devin is the type of person who enjoys a challenge and working in a high pressure environment. His career goal is to

become an operations manager. He already has a diverse background and with experience including over 2.5 years of oil

sands drilling, 1.5 years as a UBD Well Site Drilling Engineer in Saudi Arabia for Halliburton, 8 months of internship at

Husky as a Drilling Engineer, 8 months of internship at Husky as a Thermal Reservoir Engineer, 2 years on drilling rigs

(Ensign- Big Sky Drilling) in south east Saskatchewan, and summer spent working service rigs (Nabors) around

Lloydminster. Devin’s experience includes knowledge of light oil heavy oil and gas drilling. Devin is motivated,

personable, hard working and has exhibited a talent for quickly mastering new technology and skills. He is honest and

receptive with professionals and non-professionals at all levels and will not hesitate to take on new challenges in order to

expand his experience base. Devin is currently seeking a field/office drilling, completion or abandonment engineering

position where he would be able to apply and increase his experience and engineering skills.
