agricultural, or medicinal industry as an organic chemist, analytical chemist, or group leader.
Background: Since receiving my doctorate in synthetic organic chemistry in June of 1998, I
have worked as a synthetic chemist, a medicinal chemist, an analytical chemist, and as a adjunct
professor of organic chemistry. I have extensive hands-on knowledge of synthesis, purification
and chemical analysis of organic molecules. My work included detailed documentation, record
keeping and patent writing.
Experience: Principal Scientist, TransTech Pharma, 1/06-1/09
Industrial Senior Research Scientist 8/02-12/05
Responsibilities included design, synthesis and characterization of experimental
drug targets and analogs. Specific duties and activities included:
-Working with molecular modelers to develop potential lead compounds
-Refining structure/activity relationships for lead optimization.
-Developing strategies for synthesis
-Synthesis of drug candidates
-Purification by silica gel chromatography or recrystallization
-Full characterization for each compound:
- 1H NMR
- 13C NMR
- HPLC-MS
- optical rotation
-Sample preparation and submission for biological assay
-Performing routine instrument maintenance on HPLC and NMR
-Maintaining a detailed notebook and records of compounds and preparations
-Labeling, organization, and storage of drug candidates and intermediate.
-Use of ChemDraw and Microsoft Word for weekly reports and presentations
-Working with patent attorneys to write and submit patents.
-Maintaining a clean, safe work environment, including safe handling and
storage of hazardous materials, and proper waste disposal.
Senior Research Chemist, Abbott Laboratories Hospital Products division,
5/01-3/02; Research Chemist 7/98-5/01. Research work included
proprietary syntheses of fluorinated anesthetics, anti-proliferatives, and pro-
drugs. Specific duties included:
- Development of potential alternate synthetic routes for the synthesis of
proprietary inhalation and injection anaesthetics.
-Experimental verification of viable synthetic methods.
-Process development and scale up to kilogram quantity.
-Assisting in patent writing.
-Supervising and assisting a research assistant.
-Maintenance of synthesis lab and equipment, including HPLC/MS.
