SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
Problem Solving - I enjoy solving challenging problems, and through studying for a technical degree incorporating
solving complex problems and group project work, I have developed both excellent problem-solving skills and the
ability to clearly present solutions. While on placement at Cummins I gained experience using root-cause analysis
tools to solve failures found in test or at the customer, for example solving a series of filter can and fan hub leaks
this year by testing to identify respective root causes of poor supplier surface finish and tool over-insertion.
Communication - At Cummins I developed communication skills through presenting to plant management and
cross-functional group work, on some occasions leading senior engineers. I learnt to listen to and engage with all
relevant departments throughout a project to ensure the best results. Creating process documentation also
required excellent written communication to clearly convey instructions leaving no room for misinterpretation.
Leadership - Project Leader for a university Group Design Project designing a pneumatic mug lifting machine
achieving a 79% individual grade. I was given management responsibility of two apprentices on 10-week
placements at Cummins, and praised for mentoring to excellent standard. My final IMechE MPDS mentor review
was “Tom has shown excellent progress with tasks far beyond responsibility of a normal placement engineer”.
Work Ethic - I pride myself on my high work ethic, and set myself challenging goals. One example could be
completing the 2011 Liverpool Marathon after 5 months of training, raising £1,094 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. My
supervisor review on placement was “Outstanding work ethic, great organisational skills, superb character”.
Technical Innovation - As the project leader for a university group design project working for The Safety Knife
Company I designed an innovative new ergonomic safety knife able to cut through tri-wall cardboard with 75%
lower force required than the previous product, greatly reducing the chance of developing repetitive strain injury.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Beyond working and studying, I enjoy playing and watching sport. For example, I currently run a weekly friendly
departmental football match at university and captain a 6-a-side society team. On placement I organised several
departmental matches and I was proud to be voted Player’s Player of the Year for the Cummins Daventry team.
I enjoy achieving to the best of my ability, and my extra-curricular achievements include:
• Representing Northampton Town for 2 years at both rugby union and cross-country running.
• Representing Moulton School for 7 years at football (First XI), rugby (First XV), athletics and cross-country.
• Achieving the RFU (Rugby Football Union) Youth Leaders Award, and Level 2 RFU refereeing qualifications.
