-Professional Experience-
The Baker Company, Sanford, Maine
Leading manufacturer of biological safety cabinets
Senior Mechanical Designer, 2011 - 2014
Mechanical Designer on the Special Applications Projects team. Develop
custom Class II and III enclosures for study and use of hazardous
materials. Provide engineering solutions to meet customer needs. Extensive
sheet metal design.
Modification of Class II cabinet brought customer satisfaction with
increased head room, improved ergonomics and reduced possibility of work-
related injury with. Increase work surface area by about 25% with design
of cart cover
Solved lighting insufficiency with re-design of cabinet lighting. Doubled
the foot-candles of light on a Class III cabinet work area, while saving
the customer money with improved heat protection for ballast and wiring,
better heat ventilation
Design of largest guillotine-style door in Baker history. Customer is very
happy with this design, which allows them to open and close the door with
one hand, and pass caged piglets into test area and animal exposure
chamber. It greatly reduces the force (by appx 2/3) to close and seal the
door, when compared to earlier and smaller designs
Design of pass-through chambers, retractable dunk tank, and exhaust duct
work for a large, military Class III unit in a Class IV biological safety
room
Design of Class III cabinet with sliding rotor transfer tray, allowing
customer to transfer heavy rotor from pass-through chamber to main chamber.
Increased rigidity of work surface allows for the use of auxiliary
equipment in the main chamber
Technical writing of operator's manuals and product spec sheets
Strong oral and written communication skills
Goss International Americas, Durham, New Hampshire
Manufacturer of large printing presses
Associate Engineer / Mechanical Designer, 1989 - 2009; 2010 - 2011
Provide mechanical design engineering direction for the development and
customization of electro-mechanical equipment, components and systems for
high and low volume production. Support production through all phases.
Founding member of design team for new newspaper folder design, taking
product from concept to maturity
Increased five-fold the quantity of compensated newspaper webs, with use
of ball-screw actuated compensator
Saved $2500 per folder by with redesign of phasing motor assemblies
Design of mechanical interface between newspaper folder and commercial
quarterfolder, allowing customer to add extra fold to newspaper
Extensive design experience incorporating motors, pneumatics, solenoids,
bearings, actuators, air cylinders, position sensors, and other mechanical
systems and equipment; sheet metal enclosures, machined parts, weldments
Assist in resolution of assembly floor issues and maintenance of drawings
for a developing product
Design of platforming and support structure
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, ME
Military facility involved in repair and rebuilding of nuclear submarines.
Naval Architecture Technician GS-7, January 1987 to March 1989
Revised mylar drawings under general engineering direction. Contributed to
efficiency by verifying location, vendor and model number for submarine
components for repair operations. Fulfilled microfilm orders for Navy
installations throughout the United States.
