Agronomy Research Technician

• Research Plot Management: Site preparation, planting, establishment, scouting, spraying,

fertilizing, data collection, harvesting crops, processing seed and plant material. Plot

layout/designs, seed preparation, seed purchasing, soil sampling, supervision of student

employees and general plot maintenance. Liaison with industry and government

representatives, training and supervising summer students and temporary laborers.

• Teaching Assistant: collection of classroom materials, assemble course material and prepare

laboratories for demonstrations, seeding and maintaining plant specimens in the greenhouse.

• Research Observation and Data Collection: Visual observation of crops in response to trial

variables, genotypes, and management strategies, measurements such as emergence,

lodging, plant height, maturity, agronomic characteristics of various crops, crop damage,

pests present, diseases, weeds, as well as quality assurance, yields, and reporting of all plot

activities, harvest and post-harvest measurement, data entry and analysis, and report writing.

• General RSO Assistance: General RSO grounds maintenance (cutting grass, trimming

weeds), keeping inventory and maintaining stock of supplies required for the research

program. Assist co-workers and barn staff in periods of peak labor requirements (i.e.

Planting and harvesting). Make recommendations about new procedures or techniques to

improve research trial results and work efficiency. Assist with Diagnostic day and OMAF

demonstrations/agricultural tours of the RSO sites which provide information to the public

about research.
