Bureau of Meteorology Senior Network Engineer Nov
'10 - Current
- Currently involved in the Federal government's MUNRO project which
looks into the Bureau's capacity to respond to future extreme weather
and natural disaster events and to provide seasonal forecasting
services.
- The MUNRO project demanded site surveys (both staffed and un-staffed
around various geographic locations) to be carried out along with
Network Assessment, Documentation (including technical, operational,
and economic assessment) and implementation of network infrastructure.
Redesign offices copper and fiber cable plant for scalability.
- Assisted the team with integration of a second VPLS cloud to provide
network resiliency and in negotiating hardware, software, and circuit
contracts.
- Regional Offices, Forecasting centres and Radar locations around
Australia (including remote Islands) were visited for the installation of
additional communication (i.e: VPLS, xDSL, Frame Relay, 3G and/or
Inmarsat BGAN Satellite) services.
- Routing protocols were tweaked to provide automatic failover to
appropriate communication links in preparation for any future extreme
weather and natural disaster events.
- Monitoring current VPLS network for packet transportation and fully
meshed VoIP connectivity across multiple sites around Australia and
Antarctica.
- Worked on cooperate network Technology included, but was not limited to,
Cisco Switches Firewalls and Routers, Traditional L2 design: Access,
Distribution and Core. Layer 3 routing protocols were OSPF and BGP; while
routed protocols were IPv4 and IPv6 (for production).
- Establishment and use of network management, monitoring, diagnostic
applications and troubleshooting skills involving large WAN & LAN data
communications networks for the support of Bureau operations in
geographically distributed offices, sites and data centres.
- Project Management activated with highly developed ability to cost,
organize, implement and complete projects in a data communications
environment both in a timely & cost effective manner.
- Work involved with investigating and maintaining wide area technologies
including; telecommunications services (such as Frame Relay, xDSL, VPLS,
Internet VPN, ISDN, 3G, VSAT and BGAN satellite services).
