Work Experience Profile
My professional work experience spans over two decades in numerous areas in the field of pharmacy. These areas include hospital, retail, home infusion, long-term care, specialized pharmacy, compounding pharmacy, consulting and management. I have served as a JCAHO consultant and successfully steered two hospital pharmacies through accreditation in the past. In preparation for Joint Commission, I have worked in an interdisciplinary team environment to achieve compliance with the newest National Patient Safety Goals. In doing so, the current status of each institution’s conformity to the Medication Management and the 2006 National Patient Safety Goals were assessed to prepare both institutions for the survey. My success was attributed to consulting and working with other department managers and hospital leadership teams, who were instrumental in achieving the goal of a successful JCAHO accreditation for the respective pharmacy departments. I have also steered facilities through HFAP surveys.
My management and consulting experience has included running and assessing the needs of pharmacies in Long Term Acute Care hospitals (LTAC’s), downsizing and upsizing projects, new start up pharmacies, out-patient chemotherapeutic suite management, specialized mail order setup and acute care institutional management. This has also included managing a staff of 10-20 personnel and a budget of $2 to $5 million. In performing this function, I prepared monthly financial reports showing expenses, revenues and trending reports for my clients. The information was provided to administrative staff of the institution including the CEO and CFO. Instrumental to my success was a good working relationship with the membership of the hospital wide Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee, leadership and steering committees. By providing constant analysis of the financial data produced by the pharmacy departments and close monitoring of their staffing needs, I was able to bring about cost cutting measures. Likewise, I used continual monitoring and trending of high cost drugs as a review and analysis measure to keep the departments profitable and efficient. At one facility, I was responsible for instituting an automated medication dispensing system hospital wide. This involved writing policies and procedures that were instrumental in the successful implementation of the program. The project brought about increased accountability and a better billing process at the facility. This improved and streamlined monthly reports and departmental procedures. It allowed the department to cut back on workforce expenses while increasing efficiency and productivity.
My consulting experience has involved monthly nursing home consulting services, and managerial consulting for home infusion and specialized pharmacies. This work included formulary assessment and implementation. I have worked as a consultant for new start up facilities and with facilities who desired management of ongoing departmental concerns. While performing these duties, I was able to use my vast managerial experience and clinical knowledge to achieve the desired results. Other consulting projects have included CPOE (Computer Physician Order Entry) implementation in hospitals including programs that meet meaningful use standards and regulations.
As a clinician, I have worked as a Drug Information Specialist, Staff / Lead pharmacist and a Unit-based Clinical Pharmacist in small and large hospital systems. Serving on P&T committees representing the pharmacy department and working directly with nurses and other healthcare personnel was part of my duties. I have also worked with medical executive committees within hospitals systems to identify new cost effective formulary alternatives for use in the facility.
In 2008, I cofounded the Moses Lake Medical Team; a non-profit United States based charitable organization that has coordinated and implemented medical missions to Africa. Working with this organization, I have successfully arranged 4 medical missions to Africa. The medical teams I have lead have included 15 to 35 US based healthcare professionals. The members have included surgeons, internists, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, opticians, operating room technicians, speech pathologists and other medical personnel that have given free medical service to impoverished communities in the host countries. This effort has partnered with non-governmental organizations in Africa and we are currently running sustainable projects that include mobile medical clinics, community health center adoption and development, children de-worming programs, HIV prevention and pre-natal education/services.
Over the past 25 years I have worked with Meditech pharmacy order management system. I have helped implement CPOE hospital wide and in the emergency room in large and small hospitals while integrating the system to automatic dispensing cabinets (ADC) like Pyxis, Meditech, Med-Dispense and Omnicell. This work involved building and editing order strings and order sets, training physicians and nurses in using the order management (OM) system, help create favorite lists for physicians and working with nursing staff in making sure the system works appropriately. I have tested the strings and order sets to make sure they work and cross over into the pharmacy and nursing module. My hands on experience using Meditech has been relevant and helpful on all these projects. Currently, I am working on a Meditech upgrade from 6.05 to 6.07 in a hospital and this work involves testing enhancements to the systems and reviewing corrections that have been made by Meditech programmers. The facilities I have worked with have all been able to apply for and receive stage 1 incentive dollars that is available by the government once the standards and goals are met by the established deadlines.
I have had the opportunity to work with various clinical modules and order entry systems including SMS, HCI, HBS, SCS, HBOC, CPSI, CPR+ Megasourse, Siemens, HIS, Cerner Pharmnet and Meditech. I have also worked with various automation including AccuDose, Pyxis, Med Dispense, Script Pro and Omnicell.
