Summary

I work hard to get what I want and always put all my effort in everything I do in life. I love to teach and work

with people. My biggest passion is research and science.I currently work part time in a laboratory at CSU East

Bay, studying the molcular mechanism that regulates the growth and termination of posterior neuron on C.

elegans. My goal is to attend graduate school and acquire my PhD in cell and molecular biology.

Experience

Research Assistant at California State University

November 2011 - Present (2 years 8 months)

Adhered research on the molecular mechanisms driving mechanosensory neurite termination on C.elegans

Gained knowledge in genetics and in cellular and molecular biology.

Built use in lab procedures such as molecular techniques to extract genomic DNA from worms, do gel

electrophoresis, isolate plasmid (QIAGEN, spin mini prep),PCR (GoTAQ, phusium), determine the

concentration of DNA(spectronic Genesys 5), gel extraction(QIAGEN),make NGM agar plates for culturing

worms, used a zeizz axiovert 100 with an Insight firewire camera to take pictures of the PLM neurite, image J

to do a phenotypic analysis of the neurite (visualized by GFP).

English learner Tutor at Literacy Plus Hayward Public Library

June 2012 - September 2013 (1 year 4 months)

Working with a class of 12+ students from diverse backgrounds to teach basic conversational skills in

English.

American Medical Student Association: Los Medanos, Professional Outreach Recruiter

reading tutor at Longwood Middle School

September 2011 - June 2013 (1 year 10 months)

Reading tutor; Working one-one with children from low-income communities who are struggling with

reading. I work independently with students teaching them to read and critically understand a text.

research on the molecular mechanisms driving mechanosensory neurite termination on C.elegans.

sequencing of UNC-9

April 2014 to Present

Members:Lorrayne Serra

To ask if gap junctions plays a role in neurite termination, we first looked into unc-9, a gene responsible for

formation of gap junction, expressed in both PLM and BDU. We sequenced the gene to investigate what

mutation causes its phenotype. No mutation has been found yet.

I used sanger sequencing, and basic bioinformatics tools such as blast search and plasmaeditor to look for the

mutation.
