Started career with VA as a nursing assistant, moving from staff nurse to nurse administrator
as years of service progressed. Assisted in changing the way education was delivered to rural
communities by attending the first satellite nursing program through the University of New
Mexico, obtaining a BSN from Associate degree. Participated in the first and only outreach
program through University of Colorado Health Sciences to obtain MSN degree. Managed
two 80 bed locked in-patient wards at the VA Medical Center. Assisted in implementing
Sustained Treatment and Rehab Program (STAR) as the focus of the VA changing from
inpatient to outpatient services. We were able to rehab veterans that had been
institutionalized for years out to a successful community placement, eventually closing the
unit. Provided both medical and mental health services to veterans, managing a panel of 20-
30 veterans’ health care needs. Collaborated with psychiatrist to provide pain management to
a group of veterans who had increase needs or had failed other programs, and facilitated two
group for veterans suffering from PTSD.
