for data analysis and initiate proactive measures to expand business,
Guardian wanted to move the backend data to HDFS and implement hadoop
framework. The logs of customers using Guardian anytime is loaded into HDFS
for detailed analysis. The data analysis in the HDFS is conducted by use of
MapReduce, Hive and PIG jobs based on which census reports were generated
to implement new member features.
Pig and Hive queries were able to produced key findings concerning the
member including their geography, designation, social status and age group
were key factors in designing Guardian growth strategy for the upcoming
fiscal periods. Similarly key findings about the plan holders including the
size range of the plan holders, plans sold and income group were utilized
to improve the business prospects.
Role : Hadoop developer, onsite coordinator
.Responsibilities:
. Supported installation and configuration in cloudera hadoop on a 35
node cluster.
. Responsible for building scalable distributed data solutions using
Hadoop.
. Handled importing of data from various data sources, performed
transformations using Hive, MapReduce, and loaded data into HDFS.
. Used SQOOP and ETL to load data from VSAM and sort files to HDFS.
. Used Flume to collect, aggregate and store the web log data onto HDFS.
. Wrote PigLatin scripts to run ETL jobs on the data in HDFS.
. Used Hive to do analysis on the data and identify different
correlations.
. Developed and tested in a pseudo distributed cluster in Cloudera
environment.
. Developed Mapreduce jobs to do periodic data analysis about the member
trends and interests.
. Used Hadoop shell commands to move data between local and HDFS and
vice versa, alter permissions, replication factors and properties.
. Loaded part of the data into Hbase and ran queries for analysis of
member census.
. Loaded Hbase tables into Hive and ran various HiveQL queries on it.
. Monitored and managed the Hadoop cluster through Cloudera Manager.
. Installed Oozie workflow engine to run multiple Hive and Pig jobs.
. Managed core, dfs and mapreduce configuration files and made different
parameter changes to support data usage patterns.

Hbase, Java (jdk1.6)
Name of the Project : Claimfacts and Customer service
Client : Guardian Life Insurance
Corporation
Employer : Computer Sciences Corporation
Duration : Dec'09 to Oct'12
Claimfacts is a claims processing application where the medical, dental,
disability and life insurance claims that are initiated from the CICS
environment are routed to batch where in the claim adjudication and
validation process happens. Payment checks are printed in overnight batch
and mailed out to the members. Number of reports including Cost of
Benefits, Explanation of Benefits, Flexible spending account and Lifetime
accumulation reports are prepared and distributed by this system.
Customer service
This is a subsystem of Claimfacts application that operates in real time,
interacts with web based applications like Guardian Anytime portal, Siebel
portal and Claims BPR and fetches vital information pertaining to claims,
members, dependents, providers, benefits and eligibility. Customer service
refers to the core claimfacts system to fetch the data and transfers the
data to other systems via middle ware thru CICS transactions.
Trident
A subsystem of Claimfacts application that holds the dentist information
and processes the capitation every month and mails out the reports to the
dentist office.
Clearing house for Dental Xchange
Guardian developed a clearing house project for an external vendor called
Dental Xchange which is a network of providers. The eligibility information
for members were sent out from CICS via MQ to the web portal. The data
transfer was made to comply with HIPAA 837 format. As a second phase, claim
information for members and providers were made available for the vendor
using the same interfaces.

. Develop CICS and batch programs to access VSAM files to fetch claim
information.
. Maintain EOB, COB, capitation, check generation batch jobs and make
changes as per the business requirement using COBOL, DB2, JCL, DFSORT,

Name of the Project : Energy conservation and Optimization
Client : Colruyt (Belgium)
Duration : Dec'05 to Mar'09
Energy Conservation and Optimization is a pure development project which
was devised to save energy and thereby money for the firm. The energy
consumption across the machines in shops and buildings of the firm was
measured using energy meters and loaded to servers every five minutes.
These readings are retrieved and processed in mainframes and the cost of
energy consumption was calculated. Huge statistical results were arrived at
and they are uploaded to the warehouse which in turn is used to study the
pattern and reduce energy consumption. Processing real time readings from
meters was a challenge and the results were impressive.
Roles: Developer / Onsite Coordinator
Responsibilities: Analysis, Design, development, unit testing, support user
