ABRASIVE JET MACHINING (AJM): It is a process in which a material is
removed from the work piece due to impingement of fine grained abrasive by
high velocity gas stream. The stream of abrasive mixed gas is directed to
the work piece by suitably designed nozzles. Abrasive Jet Machining is
applied to cut hard and brittle materials like mica, glass, germanium,
ceramics etc. It cuts conductive as well as non-conductive materials. The
operating principle of AJM is that high pressure air from the compressor
passes through filters and control vales into the mixing chamber. The
abrasive particles and the carrier gas thoroughly mix in the mixing chamber
and a stream of abrasive gas passes through the nozzle on the work piece.
It causes indentation on the work piece thus resulting in rapture of
particles from the work surface.
