All of these sterile areas in Cebu South General Hospital were fused
into one in which we, the staff nurses, could perform any of the task
covering all of these fields. We do occasionally accept floating
assignments to the Intensive Care Unit Area, Medical-Surgical Ward, OB-GYNE
Ward, Pediatric Ward and Emergency Room in the event of staffing shortage
in the areas which we do perform the following nursing responsibilities:
- Receives patient from ER, Out Patient Department and some special cases
from OR
- Ushers patient to his room while providing utmost safety and comfort
- Appraises patient and significant others of ward policies and physical
set-up
- Continuous monitoring and assessment of patient's vital signs including
weight and abdominal girth for newborn babies and also neurological status
for post-operative patients and accurately record these data in patient's
chart
- Assesses individual patient's need, plans appropriate nursing care and
executes them according to the levels of care befitting to the patient's
health status; assesses breathing patterns and administers supplemental
oxygen as prescribed by nasal cannula, face mask, mechanical ventilator and
oxygen concentrator
- Safely administers medication via different routes such as oral, rectal,
ophthalmic, optic, topical, nebulization and parenteral by adhering
strictly with the principles of proper drug administration
- Facilitates sending of specimens to the laboratory for intended
diagnostic exams and refer abnormal and significant results to the
attending physician or resident physician on duty
- Prepares patient prior to any diagnostic procedures such as X-rays, CT
scan, 2D Echo with Doppler studies, Ultrasound, MRI, Endoscopy,
Bronchoscopy, Thoracentesis, Biopsy, etc.
- Safely perform NGT, jejunostomy and gastrostomy feeding, assists in NGT
insertion, assists in ETT insertion, does ETT suctioning, transfuses blood
and blood products, does urinary insertion, tracheostomy suctioning,
routine tracheostomy care, colostomy dressing, routine colostomy care,
bladder irrigation, gastric lavage and gavage, and cleansing enema
- Does care of patients on mechanical ventilation
- Renders Peri-operative nursing care such as review of post-operative
orders, plans care to help patient recover from the effect of anesthesia,
frequently assessing the patient's physiologic status, monitoring for
complications, managing pain, and implementing measures designed to achieve
the long-range goal of independence with self-care, successful management
of the therapeutic regimen, discharge to home and full recovery
- Makes referrals to resident physicians on duty or attending physician
regarding patient's health condition
- Monitors intake and output of patient taking special considerations on
post-operative patients with Penrose drain, Jackson Pratt, Hemovac, CTT,
Gomco suction machine and refer to resident physician on duty or attending
physician for any irregularities
- Performs wound care and dressing by adhering strictly on the principles
of aseptic technique
- Acts as a Code Nurse in the absence of or while the Code Nurse is busy
assisting other emergency situations
- Accurately documents patient's chart all nursing care performed during
the entire shift
- Performs case endorsement to receiving nurse on the caseload handled
- Provides client teaching and discharge planning
- Provides holistic and effective, tender loving, nursing care all

the wound is open
- Controls all needles, sponges and instruments to be sure they are

Circulating Nurse
- Manages the operating room and protects the safety and health needs of
the patient by monitoring the activities of members of the surgical team
and checking the conditions in the operating room
- Verifies consent; coordinates the team, and ensures cleanliness, proper
temperature, humidity, lightning and the safe functioning of the equipment
and the availability of supplies and instruments
- Monitors aseptic practices to avoid breaks in technique while
coordinating the movement of related personnel (medical, radiography and
laboratory); monitors the patient and documents specific activities through
the operative procedure to ensure patient's safety and well-being
- Provides holistic and effective, tender loving, nursing care all
throughout the entire surgical procedure
PACU Nurse
- Assesses the patient's oxygen saturation, pulse volume and regularity,
depth and nature of respiration, skin color, level of consciousness, and
ability to respond to commands
- Checks the surgical site for drainage of hemorrhage and connect all
drainage tubes and monitoring lines
- Maintains patent airway and cardiovascular stability
- Relieves pain and anxiety
- Determines readiness for discharge from Post Anesthesia Care Unit
- Provides post-operative anesthesia and nursing care
Nursery - NICU Nurse
- Receives newborn well babies from delivery room
- Knowledgeable in providing immediate newborn care
- Specialized in the care of ill premature newborn infants
- Ensures better temperature support, isolation from infection risk,
specialized feeding, and access to specialized equipment and resources
Labor/Delivery Room Nurse
- Provides care to patients who have complications of pregnancy requiring
hospitalization; to patients in labor who have uncomplicated or complicated
deliveries; and to patients who have recently delivered
- Manages patient care in the Operating Room during a Cesarean delivery
- Works directly with the surgeons during a Cesarean delivery by passing
instruments, etc., to the physicians
LR/DR Charge Nurse
- Makes adequate provision for the nursing care of patients in her unit and
supervises that care
- Maintains good relationship with patients and also with their relatives
and friends
- Arranges for the assistance required by the members of the medical staff
and other professional personnel
- Provides for the administration of treatment and medication ordered by
the medical staff and its supervision; provides a comfortable, orderly,
clean and safe environment for patients and provides for accurately
descriptive records of the medical treatment carried out by the nurses and
the nursing care given to patients
