Success Stories

Reader's Digest - PMO for Open Systems Management Automation

Reader's Digest asked Mr. Besenyei, a Project Manager for Amdahl, to head

up a project to automate the management of their Open Systems platforms.

At that time, there was no central operational control over the open

systems platforms that departments had decided to move into the data center

to take advantage of 24x7 operational control. Our service consisted of

several phases;

. Vision Definition for Open Systems Operational Automation,

. Vendor competition,

. Vendor selection,

. Build of a Project Plan,

. Execution of the project plan.

At every step the customer was brought into the process to certify vendor

selection and subsequent plans. During the process, members of the PMO

attended regular departmental meetings to take every opportunity to

communicate the vision, the plan and the progress as well as hear and

respond to any objections from key stake holders.

The project resulted in an operational environment with automation in place

to control open systems production and to alert operations when problems

were detected. This also included a help desk revision with processes to

alert management when issues were not handled in the appropriate manor.

The project was finished on time and under budget.

Reader's Digest- PMO for Y2K Remediation

In preparation for the turn of the century, all of the infrastructure

software had to be remediated and certified as Y2K compliant. As a result

a project was launched that Mr. Besenyei directed as the Director of

Infrastructure Operational Software. This included identification of

current release levels, developing plans to upgrade to compliant release

levels, testing newly installed release levels and then planning to roll

the compliant software into production. This was an effort that included

17 staff members, over a six month period. The effort was a resounding

success and no issues were encountered New Year's Eve as the clock struck

midnight.

Reader's Digest - PM for Data Center Consolidation Project

As the Director of Infrastructure Operational Software, Mr. Besenyei also

served as the project manager in the US for the effort to fold the European

data centers into Pleasantville, NY. The effort included the entire 17

member staff and lasted many months. Two data centers had to be merged

into Pleasantville, NY while showing no significant disruption to service

on either side the Atlantic. There were many obstacles to surmount that

included duplicate tape labels, dissimilar software platforms, data

transfer with no loss of consistency and minimal downtime, operational and

support staff education on the European platforms, development of a

detailed project plan, managing to a deadline, and final cutover. In the

end both datacenters were successfully folded into Pleasantville and

brought up with almost no downtime.

General Electric - Team Lead for Amdahl on Data Center Consolidation

GE decided to consolidate their 27 datacenters into a Mega Center in

Cincinnati, OH. This involved the identification of the hardware, and

workloads being run in each datacenter. The effort included the

measurement of the workloads and then the design of hardware to receive the

moved workloads. As the manager of this effort Mr. Besenyei was

responsible for heading up the Amdahl engineering team working on this

effort. This team consisted of engineers from various US locations. The

result was an outstanding success and resulted in Mr. Besenyei being named

US Manager of the Year.

Citizen's Bank - Design Tape to Disk Migration

While at Forsythe Mr. Besenyei drew upon his knowledge of StorageTek tape

libraries and EMC Disk Library (a device that simulated a tape library with

disk) for mainframe to define the movement of all tape volumes to several

EMC DLm devices. The design included the sizing of the environment and

then the design of redundant copies of the tape volumes in an alternate

datacenter and SunGard. Mr. Besenyei identified and managed a third party

company with the necessary software to move the volumes from real tape

volumes to simulated tape on disk in a non-disruptive manor while

production continued. The project was a success.
