RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Michigan State University, Lyman Briggs College East Lansing, MI
Research Student September-December 2012
• Pursued and presented results of an ecology research project with the purpose of observing and determining
the effects of the herbicide glyphosate on paranephrops planiforms. Under normal conditions crayfish are
excellent habitat engineers and optimal foragers. By exposing invertebrates to different amounts of the
herbicide, it can be determined which concentration levels are safe to use commercially without drastically
affecting the invertebrates. This experiment consisted of four different groups of crayfish (control, low
toxicity, medium toxicity, high toxicity), which were all exposed to different levels of glyphosate. The
hypothesis of this experiment stated, with an increase in glyphosate, there will be a decrease in crayfish
activity and optimal foraging. On the contrary, the null hypothesis stated that an increase of glyphosate will
have no affect on crayfish activity and foraging.

Research Student January-May 2014
• Examined soil from two environments to test for the presence of antibiotic resistance. Soil samples were
from animal enclosures at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing and the Sanford Woodlot in East Lansing. Research
included the identification of bacteria that are resistant to more common antibiotics such as ampicillin,
tetracycline, and kanamycin. Once isolated, the bacteria were characterized using microbiological and
molecular techniques.
Michigan State University, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics East Lansing, MI
Research Assistant January-May 2014
• Examined the diversity (phylogenic, physiological, and metabolic) of various Pseudomonas and
Aeromonas spp. found in environmental samples from sites across Michigan State University’s campus.
There was a focus on Pseudomonas and Aeromonas isolates from the Red Cedar River and identification of
the antibiotic resistances and virulence factors carried by the isolates. The first approximation of diversity
was comparative rRNA sequencing. After the completion of diversity estimates from 16S rRNA analysis,
the next phase of research was antibiotic resistance and virulence factors.
