Description: ‘ Medicare Part D’ was a new outpatient prescription drug benefit added to the Medicare Program
according to the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA).The
d rug benefit would be provided by private entities both stand-alone prescription drug plans (PDPs)
and comprehensive managed care plans known as Medicare Advantage (MA) plans (formerly
Medicare+Choice). Medicare Part D was the new voluntary prescription drug coverage that was
made available to all people on Medicare with effect from January 1, 2006. The program would help
seniors pay for some of the cost of prescriptions.
