EXPERIENCE
BECKMAN COULTER Present
Particle Characterization Through Light Scattering
Currently developing the next generation of particle characterization instruments though light scatter by:
• Replicating and optimizing legacy algorithms.
• Performing a proof of concept of the user experience by developing an intuitive and easy to use UI.
• Providing results, accuracy and performance in line with the highest quality standards and cutting
edge technologies.
Flow Cytometry
Demonstrated proof of concept for a new flow cytometry platform through:
• Gathering and refinement of requirements, project feasibility, partial implementation and prototyping
of the instrument control software.
• Technologies: MVP, in .NET - WPF for the front end, C# for the business logic, C++ for the
compute engines and 8086 Assembly for speed optimizations.
FPGA SerDes and CPLD programming
• Reverse engineered particle characterization instrument boards.
• Develop the new logic design architecture using the MAX V CPLD.
• Implemented the SerDes protocol using the Cyclone IV FPGA to allow for high speed
communications between peripherals.
• Technologies: Altera platforms, VHDL as hardware description language and C# for instrument pulse
generation and analysis.
Algorithms
• Worked on speed improvements for algorithms that run in the hematology instrument DxH 800 using
the NVIDIA CUDA parallel processing architecture.
• Improvements made allowed the new algorithms to run as much as ten times faster than the legacy
code.
• Technologies: NVIDIA CUDA Framework, C for kernel functions, C++ for functions wrapping and
C# as the business logic tier and view tiers.
Biostatistics
• Implemented the new algorithms for assay thermal adjustments, and contributed to the design and
implementation of the new qualitative assay graphical user interface for nuclear diagnostics
instruments.
• Technologies: JAVA for business logic, and some S as the statistical programming language.
Embedded Software Testing
• Developed VectorCAST regression scripts covering most of the embedded software (ESW) layer,
which ran on a Green Hills RTOS.
• Developed the Test Plan, and expanded the existing ESW Test Strategy.
• Configured and deployed the TeamCity build server, which performed automated software builds as
well as executing automated tests which would pass or fail the build based on specified criteria.
OTHER
Web Design for Power System Laboratory at FIU Jan 2008 – Aug 2008
Implemented and deployed a comprehensive university website to assist research students in developing and
showcasing their work.
Help Desk and Desktop Support Dec 2006 – Aug 2007
Provided full desktop support to faculty and staff at FIU. Assisted in the repair and maintenance of computer
lab equipment and research laboratories.
MILITARY
United States Navy Jun 2001 – Jun 2005
Served as Plane Captain (Crew Chief) for Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-138.
Was presented with the Plane Captain of the Year Award in 2003. One tour of duty in Afganistan and two
tours of duty in Iraq. Participated in operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and Iraqi Freedom from 2003 to
2005.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Languages: C#, C, C++, Java, JSP, 8086 Assembly, MIPS Assembly, VHDL
Other Proficiencies: OOP, Embedded Software, .NET framework, Software Lifecycles, Automated Software
Testing, Parallel Programming, Software Architecture, Dependency Injection.
Proficient in English and Spanish.
Experienced with software design, architecture, choosing the right frameworks/models/design patterns
appropriate for a given application, extracting requirements from documentation and customer reports
obtained from customer visits. I am currently directly involved with customers interviews and interpreting their
needs as requirements.
Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD) in agile environments and extensive Waterfall SLC
experience in engineering environments.
I am a big believer in testing which encompasses unit testing, regression testing, integration testing and
designing for testiability overall.
I believe that quality must be built in the software with the right talent, tools, and technologies.
