DIRECTOR, SOFTWARE PRODUCT QUALITY

Director of Software Product Quality, reporting to the Vice President of Engineering. Responsible for the quality of all ZixCorp software products and services. Addresses company/product problem areas and drives solutions to them. Responsibilities include:

• Transform a fragmented, ineffective QA department with poor processes, minimal tools and staffing issues into a highly productive and cohesive QA team. Establish, document and implement sound quality processes, and develop project/program management and monitoring tools that enable the QA department to handle significant workloads while delivering products of recognized high quality.

• Work with the Director of Development to improve the quality of the software going into QA.

• Improve configuration management, build paperwork and change tracking, and improve requirements and design documentation. Establish CCBs, regular defect reviews and designer testing.

• Realign resources, workloads, automation framework and processes to enable the transition to Agile methods.

• Actively participate in daily stand-ups, story workshops, iteration planning, backlog reviews, test case workshops, etc., to drive Agile methods and ensure quality throughout the software lifecycle.

• Manage, with other Directors, the product roadmap and work pipelines, ensuring best use of engineering resources across groups and efficient execution of highest priority projects.

• In early 2004, ZixCorp acquired an eRx solution with out-of-control quality processes. Directed all quality efforts, managed product and all projects related to eRX product, and became subject matter expert. Developed and implemented release schedules and CCBs, resulting in the ability to deploy an unprecedented 12 product releases to the customers in a single year.

• Lead effort to translate products into 12 languages, localizing the UI for the foreign user base. Author translation process documents to ensure repeatability of best practices for all future product releases.

• Build QA team from the ground up by recruiting, interviewing, hiring, establishing performance goals, and reviewing and mentoring staff.

• Establish metrics and measures to show health of systems, productivity of teams, quality of releases, status of projects, etc.

• Creatively find time and resources (within heavy software release workloads) to drive test automation. Establish an automation framework (architecture) that minimizes maintenance of the automation scripts and write over 250 KLOC of automated scripts in WinRunner, QTP and Mechanize, resulting in reducing test cycle time by nearly half.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Led team of 11 client-server programmers, four DBAs, three SQAs and a technical writer. Team’s mission was to create and maintain quality software systems for the Flexjet business. Responsibilities included:

• Understanding business needs.

• Defining roadmaps to implement systems for business model sustainability and growth.

• Defining and ensuring adherence to standards and processes for in-house system development and support.

• Evolving a six-person team that was struggling to maintain legacy systems into a 19-person development group.

• Leading development group that designed, developed and deployed three mission-critical production systems in an 18 month period, resulting in Flexjet’s achieving unprecedented growth. These systems included:

Trip Entry and Management System (TEAMS) that applied business rules to ensure owners’ trips were valid, scheduled in accordance with regulations and accommodated owner preferences.

Billing System that, when integrated with TEAMS, compiled all information about a flown trip and generated invoices and monthly contract usage, eliminating unbilled trips by replacing the previous paper-based billing system and saving Flexjet substantial revenues.

Web-Based Reporting System to provide data-driven management reports for running the business. Created over 85 production reports in the first two years it was deployed, resulting in users generating these reports over 475,000 times and demonstrating the imperative for data-driven decision making in managing the business.

• Managing a budget of $2.5 million and providing executives with consistent and timely insight on department performance via metrics, reports and presentations.

SOFTWARE TEAM LEAD on HTI Program

Horizontal Technology Interface (HTI) was a Second Generation FLIR Control for Army vehicles. The software system was real time, embedded, running on three TMSC40 DSPs and written in the Ada programming language.

• Led a team of software engineers to support enhancements to the existing system

• Co-created a method for automating regression testing by writing a programming language (lexx/yacc) simulating the sending of messages from the tanks as well as to write all test cases, resulting in:

o Reducing the duration of regression testing and FQT processes by more than half

o Allowing repeatability, minimizing personnel time and enabling logging run-time data for each step of each test, which had never before been accomplished

o Obtaining funding on an on-going basis due to its outstanding ROI; and

o Receiving additional funding from management and the customer for efforts to automate similar tests for the hardware side
