Academic Research Experience

Lynch Laboratory, University Park, PA

Conducted research using 21 different genotypes of rice plants from

different regions of the world. The goal was to help crop growth in

nutrient poor soils around the world. Compared different rice plants growth

particularly analyzing roots and root hair growth. The capacity of plants

to absorb both water and mineral nutrients from the soil is related to the

plant s ability to develop an extensive root system. Of the total root

surface area, root hairs can contribute up to 67 %. Many different chemical

solutions were used to grow and study the plants. Numerous dyes were also

used to help visualize and monitor plant growth.

Analyzing equipment included: dissecting scopes, live camera cards, Adobe

Photoshop 7.0 software, Scion Image 1.63 software, as well as other

imaging, micrometer scale conversion, and magnification software.
