Houston, TX
Director of Research and Development (2000 – 2006)
Programming Manager (1993 – 2000)
Programmer/Analyst (1990 – 1993)
Carter-Pertaine provides school administration software for both student accounting and
financial applications to customers nationwide.
As Director of Research and Development, my duties mainly involved working with
management and staff to insure that company goals were met. During this time I
migrated our entire student applications product (written in Speedware 4GL and COBOL)
from HP MPE/XL to UNIX. I was also heavily involved in transitioning our software from a
terminal to a browser-based interface.
As Programming Manager, my greatest accomplishment was single-handedly
redesigning and coding the company’s entire suite of student applications within two
years. The project entailed creating an entirely new database design incorporating a
sophisticated data security scheme, and conversion of all screens and reports from
COBOL to Speedware 4GL with a more integrated and intuitive user interface. The
company’s aim was to create an easy to use system, provide a marketable product, and
solve Y2K issues. All of these goals were achieved in a timely fashion, and the company
profited by subsequently obtaining a number of new clients.
As lead Programmer/Analyst of student systems, I was primarily involved in design and
maintenance of critical applications such as student demographics, grading, attendance,
scheduling, and state reporting. Other tasks included upgrading data entry screens to
make the software more ‘user friendly’.

As Systems Programmer, I was primarily involved in system tuning and integration of
various peripherals (printers, mark -sense scanners, bar code readers).
As Application Programmer/Analyst, I was responsible for critical modules such as
student demographic data, student attendance, and district reports to the Texas
Education Agency.
As Computer Operator, my duties consisted of daily operations of high volume
processing on large-scale mainframes.
