SMITH LIMOUSINE SERVICE AND AIRPORT CABS, INC.-Newport News, VA .
Owner, Operator, 1982-1987
I took over all daily operations of the company upon my Fathers untimely death. The
daily operations included accounts payable and receivable, payroll, bookkeeping, hiring
of employees, dispatching all vehicles to the assigned pick-up locations. Meeting each
commercial airline that arrived at the airport and selling tickets for seats in the
limousines to each of the cities in the area. We were the only company at any of the
area airports that provided door-to-door service. The company had 45 employees and
29 vehicles at the time I took over. I had to oversee daily maintenance and decide which
companies would do repair work on the vehicles. I had to negotiate contracts with the
Airport commission. The company had a contract with the airport to provide
transportation of passengers to and from the airport and all outlining cities. The hours of
operation were approximately 19 hours per day, seven days a week, 365 days per year.
The company had contracts with each Airline that operated at the airport to deliver all
lost baggage and supply transportation of their passengers to other airports in the event
of mechanical failure or bad weather. The company had contracts with the Colonial
Williamsburg Foundation to provide transportation and tours from their hotels to The
Jamestown Foundation, The Yorktown Foundation, Carters Grove Plantation, Busch
Gardens and Water Country USA. I also had to negotiate contracts with the shipping
agents to provide transportation for foreign seaman when their ships were docked at the
Newport News Shipyard. We also had contracts with the local hospitals to deliver blood
and supplies from one facility to another. In the state of Virginia in order to operate a
limousine service you must buy your tariffs from the State Corporation Commission.
This gave the company the right to transport persons from point A to point B. I had to do
all the yearly reports for the commission and are all reports for price increases. In order
to operate the Taxi service, permits and licenses needed to be attained from the City of
Newport News. Daly reports of the number of passengers and luggage delivered to and
from the Airport had to be received by the Airport Commission.
