I used a prism pole to assist the instrument man. The prism is used to
receive the instruments measurement.
The rod man is the entry level position in surveying.

I spent half my time in the field and the other half in the office
performing clerical duties such as- filing plats and deeds, billing
clients, mailing clients finished product, data entry, and answering phones
when needed.
